Actually, there was one thing which I felt was important not from a psychiatric POV but just in general was that the emotional development is so under-valued (this was written a while ago so predates its own impact on the field where this as an important area. Caregivers, of course, respond to the needs and demands of their children in different ways and this gives rise to different attachment patterns.

The Strange Situation involves the infant experiencing a series of brief separations and reunions while their reactions are observed. During the toddler years, mobility, play and language develop, providing opportunities to extend attachment relationships to siblings and close adults. The caregiving dimensions and their developmental benefit to the child are represented by the The Secure Base model. This book can help you to understand yourself and the way you relate to other people, other people and how they relate to you, and the basis of the way we form attachments. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. These relationships serve the same function for adults as for children; they provide a secure base which offers comfort and reassurance and at the same time, allows us to operate in the world with confidence. But it also considers how those relationships can enable the child to develop competence in the outside world of school, peer group and community. Initially the infant may simply make demands almost constantly to attract and keep the attention of the caregiver or may become rather helpless in the absence of a predictably successful strategy. These controlling behaviours usually include role-reversal in which a child acts towards others like a parent might towards a child e. It is a series of essays that outlines Bowlby's theories of attachment styles and their determinants.

I've already heard and read about attachment theory written by others during my undergraduate study, but it was only after reading this book do i have a clear idea of what attachment really is.Bowlby observed that these models are established in the first few years of life and as children get older models retain some flexibility but become increasingly resistant to change. He explains succinctly the shortcomings of Freud's theory of energy and developmental phases and outlines his own exploration of ethology and also animal attachment behaviour studies as an approach to understanding the complex problems that arise when early human attachment relationships go awry. The text cited above also gives an idea of how the author draws from ideas and results from ethology (especially Konrad Lorenz studies). The basic idea is very convincing (in that it is based on quite obvious aspects of human nature), but then suddenly he arrives to conclusions that are not actually supported by the facts. This is, perhaps, one of the most important theories for the understanding of human nature and behavioral patterns.
