About this deal

For example problem 52 where he gives a line in which Black loses their queen resulting in a nearly 6 point advantage for White, while the best move would keep the queen and give less than a 2 point advantage for White and in that line it's much more difficult for White to find the moves that keep the advantage too. The positions are well chosen, and have the feel of real game positions that you could actually meet, rather than rare and unrepresentative curiosities. While in the tactics book the chapters can actually be misleading because often the combinations make use of several tactics so if you just look for the specific tactic in the chapter heading you could overlook things. I've actually done most of the Reinfeld book but in terms of actually being able to resolve the problems quickly again, I can probably only get 75% of the ones I've done. The only quibble I have with Master Reinfeld is that he did not identify the source players and game for each puzzle.

Of course each book can be taken on its own, but together they make a wonderful collection, and cover the full range of tactical chess. Guess am just too visual a person to overlook this, even though I've heard many chess players say how good the puzzles themselves are. Most difficult are the examples that run seven moves and more; some of these may even stump an ordinary master.Reinfeld's solutions do usually represent the best continuation, and its important not to settle for the exchange, when you could have won a rook!

Learn the 2-mover tactics from Polgar's big book COLD (there are about 1000 of 'em and they're not all obvious, at least to me! Any beginner who wants to improve their chess and take it to the next level should go through the book and solve the puzzles in this book thousands of times and defeating you at chess will not be easy for average chess players. So, the object of this book is to add to your knowledge, to make you a strong chessplayer, and (last but not least) to delight you with some of the most beautiful moves ever played on the chessboard. If there is a mistake/problem with an item or description, please let me know and I will do my utmost in resolving it, and making you VERY HAPPY! There are so many opportunities in chess missed or overlooked because of the blind valuation of the pieces, and this really helps you see past materialism to win in apparently even sutuations.

The book clearly has its faults, particularly the current reproduction, but I did not find any of these faults to be important. Start going through Reinfeld or a similar intermediate tactic book (as someone would normally do, with calculation, etc. If you have an e-book such as Kindle, you might want to look into "Tactics Time" by Tim Brennan and Anthea Carson, which I wrote about in another thread. Two books that I would recommend are "Chessercizes" by Bruce Pandolfini, and "Chess Tactics for Students" by John Bain. I go through these books about every 4 - 6 months, scoring myself as to solutions and, thereby, measuring my progress and focussing on my weaknesses. The current "Chess Lovers Library" reprint is a photographic reproduction of the original, and the some of the black pieces merge into the black squares on some of the diagrams. I did about 1500 of the problems in Polgar's big book in 2001 or thereabouts, spending 15 -30 minutes per day. The next day I put it in an engine and it said after Bxf7 Black would even be a tiny bit better with Nxf7 and not Rxf7 which would be a blunder.

Whilst it is very useful to look at positions like this one of the problems of chess is that real games do not come with "white to win in 2" guidance so when you are told that this combination contains a pin it is not a realistic analytical situation.
