It also allows him to tweak some of the editing and effects that he was unable to complete to his satisfaction at the time of the film's original 1982 theatrical release. The most likely cause of most of the grain is issues with the film negative the 4K master was derived from. Vangelis' legendary score is at last fully immersive, with select instruments often directed to specific channels instead of the whole thing sounding like sonic mush emanating only from the fronts.

If you've got any friends out there unsure about 4K or just don't "see the point," this transfer for Blade Runner The Final Cut should be the demo disc you use to wow them. Blade Runner' finally sounds spatially alive and vibrant, with surrounds that now live and breathe -- just as it should be. The Light That Burns: Remembering Jordan Cronenweth (SD, 20 minutes) - A fitting tribute to the real star of 'Blade Runner,' the late director of photography Jordan Cronenweth.

It’s also possible that in mastering the image for 4K, someone has been a bit over-enthusiastic with the sharpness tools. The entire supplemental section is featured in standard definition, probably due more to the age of the film than anything, but that shouldn't detract from the extreme number of quality features in the set. Regardless of your previous experience with Blade Runner, this new five disc set should be required viewing by all Blu-ray fans around the world. Even fans who come to this release most interested in the older versions of the movie are unlikely be disappointed. It's now well-known that Scott and Ford didn't get along, Ford also didn't get along with Young, and both of the film's main producers (and, at times, the studio) didn't get along with the final cut of the movie. People looking for ‘3D pop’, for hyper-real clarity, for a full-on surround impact are going to be disappointed, but then again, if you’re expecting a 30 year old film. I'm overjoyed to say that the film has never looked and sounded better - and it's unlikely it'll get any better than this. The studio offers 1080p/VC-1 encodes of not only 'The Final Cut,' but also the original 1982 domestic and International versions of the film, and the 1992 Director's Cut. It’s been suggested to me by someone who works in the film industry, too, that the film’s negative is unusually thin, and that mistakes were made with the exposure of the original negative - two problems now brought to light as never before by the HDR process. Although again I didn't despise the earlier DVD editions, this restoration is nothing short of a revelation.

It’s just a shame that the wonderfully vibrant new grading comes with significant grain and noise strings attached. While the transfer on that 2007 DVD may have finally hit the ‘sliced bread’ benchmark, the limits of the Blu-ray format aren’t tested by this film. However, because the 1992 cut was lopped together quickly, the editing was a bit clunky and some visual effects inconsistencies from the original remained.Even if the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 ends up being a subpar sequel, nothing can diminish my love and appreciation for this film. However, some mixup occurred and reviewers were actually given Disc 1, 2, and the Blu-ray Disc 3 of that 2007 set that included the Theatrical Cut, International Cut, and the 1992 Director's Cut. In those years, audiences have been witness to multiple releases, various versions of the film, as well as a fairly definitive restoration effort. Blade Runner on this Blu-ray is hardly the same, but it’s just that much better than the DVD to make double-dipping essential, not just optional.

To this day I can't watch one without thinking about the other and then weighing the idea of watching both movies together. According to Warner, the studio was not able to upgrade the video-based bonus material to full 1080 due to production constraints, so all of this material is in 480p/i/MPEG-2 video only. While the 4K Blu-ray certainly looks much more detailed than its actually rather soft looking HD Blu-ray counterpart, though, this explanation doesn’t feel right. The intensity really is just staggering at times, especially with the shots of the external city streets. Rest assured, however, that despite any complaints from fans about early cuts of Blade Runner, the film in its original form is still powerful and nothing short of exceptional. Overall it’s impossible not to be impressed by the work that’s gone into the 4K HDR remaster of Blade Runner. Given the circumstances of watching two of the greatest science-fiction films back to back at such a young age, my little 10-year-old brain was suitably blown.
