By the time he bought the handsome A-frame house at 3121 Arrowhead Drive in the mid 1970s, Russell Albion Meyer had made thirty or so feature films.In truth, that’s all the house was: a film studio hangar combined with a personal shrine, crammed with film making equipment, such as his revered editing machine and boxes of artifacts. He’d built an extension onto the back of the Arrowhead Drive house so he could escape from prying eyes and work on his films. The single greatest thing about this picture, though, is the phenomenal narration by Stuart Lancaster, written with Meyer's signature verbosity (aided in great part, I think, by Roger Ebert's screenwriting).

Grade A stay-over visitors were shown the guest house around the back by the pool; lesser acquaintances made do with a fold-out cot among the storage. If I’m remembering correctly, someone in the Meyer biography said that Janice Cowart thinks Meyer’s films are sleazy and sees no value in them. Dustier and older, but still there waiting for Russ to re-appear, jump in the driver’s seat, stomp on the gas, and head for a spartan shoot in the desert hills.The original UK cinema release suffered heavy BBFC cuts and lost around 10 minutes of footage with substantial edits to all of the sex scenes and a shot of Lamar's exposed genitals following a groin kick.

The auction was over in minutes and a few weeks later, together with a selection of editing splicers, analog light meters, memorabilia, photographs, and intriguingly, several reels of undeveloped film, it was delivered to my Brooklyn home.

Nonetheless the impeccable Kitten Natividad and the often unmentioned, but still unforgettable Ann Marie stay true to Meyer fashion and manage to suck in the viewer while Meyer dishes out social taboos and common problems associated with the modern couple. We see a lot of a few other women, too, including a melon-breasted Christian radio announcer, and, rather unfortunately, a junk yard proprietor (you'll understand when you see her). So I guess the estate is making some money, but certainly not as much as it could if it were run by someone who cared even a bit. In my opinion, Meyer is at his best when he's mixing comedy porn with a thriller plot structure - with Faster Pussycat! I became an unlikely Meyer fan years ago after catching Beyond the Valley of the Dolls on TV late one night.

Beneath the Valley is one of Meyer's better known works, largely due to its broader distribution, over-indulgence of feminine beauty and crass humor. At the side of the building sat Russ’ weights bench, just a few yards from a still pristinely-maintained pool.
