That the band steered Yellow Submarine from morose folk trifle to boisterous stoner singalong seems improbable, but the tapes don’t lie: through a combination of focused acoustic woodshedding and whimsical studio risks, the band arrived at the more familiar, upbeat Yellow Submarine.

Previous boxsets from Universal or Capitol used Rainbo pressing and suffered through poor pressings- particularly the solo John Lennon titles. In late August 2022, Martin confirmed via Twitter that Revolver would receive a remix, [4] with a further tweet hinting at an additional surround sound mix. All the new Revolver releases feature the album's new stereo mix, sourced directly from the original 4-track master tapes. Let’s go back to the old stereo mix which was crafted by original Beatles producer George Martin in 1966. Overall, it's still enjoyable, but this is the second box set in a row with some manufacturing / pressing (or mastering? That being said, I prefer the UK version as opposed to the “butchered” ( you had to know that was coming😏) US release.

But when you start listening to the early versions of these songs in their embryonic states — via the two full LPs of outtakes dubbed Sessions — you hear the evolution of the rhythms and beats he brought to the table. When Voormann attended the Abbey Road playback, the album didn’t yet have a title; options included “Pendulum,” “Four Sides of the Circle” and “Beatles on Safari. The real improvement is the vocals – the backing vocals were always gorgeous, but they are so full and expansive in this new mix, it is absolutely heavenly. And Your Bird and Dr Robert both bounce and rock along on an album that could have gotten weighed down with its slow strings and sad songs. In that sense, looking at the relatively threadbare musical arrangements, this is still a transitional album. As a result, we’ve all been listening to a pretty awful stereo mix of Revolver for the past fifty plus years. My only gripe is that brilliant electric guitar drone that bursts in after “Love me while you can… drone…before I’m a dead old man… drone…” is more powerful in the 1999 mix, Giles kind of missed the boat there, it’s muted in the 2022 mix and loses some of its impact. Which, incidentally, was an album no one was really sure could ever properly be remixed, due to some of the issues described above with instrumented being lumped together on a single track.

after putting on the new stereo mix to find the whole presentation much, much warmer, and far more inviting as an end-to-end listen. You’re right, that guitar solo in “Got to Get You Into My Life” is marvelous, and it does get overshadowed a bit in the new mix. Doctor Robert, meanwhile, has cool guitar work, an appealingly languid John vocal, great Paul harmonies, and an infectious groove. The orchestral buildup on A Day in the Life I suppose, and the crazy circus atmospheric “Being for the Benefit of Mr.
