BACARDÍ Reserva Ocho is a complex golden rum with a deep, layered and mellow flavour of dried fruits, spices and oaky vanilla.As I mentioned in my earlier review of the Bacardi Reserva I had put off trying the Bacardi 8 due mainly to my dislike of Bacardi Gold. The combination of molasses base, different distillations and filtrations is carefully considered and balanced perfectly here. Prolonged ageing allows a concentration of flavours via evaporation and extended contact with charred wood, causing tannins to diffuse into the rum. It is said that Bacardi 8 was created in 1862 and kept private for the Bacardi family for 7 generations.

The nose of Bacardi 8 Year Old is fresh and perfumed, with notes of oak and peels and a subtle syrup and fennel aroma. The tube and bottle have that sort of retro look that Bacardi go for and is consistent with the usual Bacardi branding. Still this hasn’t stopped the Bacardi Bashers and the Rum Conspiracy Theorists (there are some absolute crackers to be found online) from suggesting otherwise…….
