The truth was that you felt a certain way inside, and while the people who had known you your whole life still probably saw you that way, the number of new people who could appreciate you as that person, that inside person, rather than just a collection of the frailties of age, was limited.

It’s clearly a case of murder, so for the police it’s now simply a case of identifying who had both the opportunity and the motive. As a result she couldn’t help herself getting into trouble with both employers and police and you really feel for her as she gets involved in a houseboat murder. Miriam knows that just because Laura is witnessed leaving the scene of a horrific murder with blood on her clothes, that doesn't mean she's a killer. These are out main characters and they connect to each other in ways both predictable and unpredictable.Sorry but I have to admit this is not one of my favorite works of the author and not one of my favorite reads of this year! I thought the title was very apropo because of the slow burn of anger, hatred, jealousy and deceit brewing within these characters. Wickedly dark and gorgeously written, this is a novel you'll be thinking about long after the last delicious pages.
