In that regard, Spice and Wolf by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Jyuu Ayakura is a completed romance story. The caveat is, as I said, the bitterness that often accompanies this community and its platform–hence this feeling that there are two factions at war rather than two sides of a bookish coin.

The illustrations in the novels are not spectacularly well drawn either, but for the most part they choose to show the more important scenes and do add a lot to those moments (though they never seem to miss moments when Holo is nude either). Not that spicy romances can’t have emotional bonding, or that non-spicy romances can’t have stiff, two-dimensional characters. After they stopped making the anime and I found out about the light novels, I knew I just had to start reading them. Listen, what two consenting adults do behind closed doors is their business, but a lot of young people read these books (some younger than they should), and like I said above, fictional romance does impact our perception of the real thing when we’re not careful. Holo is eccentric, outgoing, and curious, but also a little condescending (though she is somewhat justified in this regard since she is a goddess). Side note: as someone from the Midwest, I have to work hard to divorce my association of the KU acronym with Kansas University.But (and I say this with as little condescension as possible) because the focus is on the romance, and because many of these books are self-published, the quality of writing can be… not great. This is also a romance story, so there is clear, but slow progression between Lawrence and Holo throughout their journeys.

Further cementing my absolute adoration for the series, J Michael Tatum and Brina Palencia are amazing, and I am filled with nostalgia for the anime that they voiced so long ago. This shift in focus does line up with the direction of the story, so it can be praised in that regard, but it also makes the stories less interesting and far more generic.
