About this deal

What I loved about this, in addition to the crazy new world and complex societal structure, was the characters. And this, I think, is what I hope you focus on when you read the reviews, mine included, and decide if Ninefox Gambit is for you. They’re there the whole time, but like the shark in Jaws, they mostly stay out of focus until the latter part of the story arc. It’s not how I prefer to read, and it affected my ability to build positive feelings for the book beyond intellectual appreciation and respect for the craft that went into its writing. I am going to see if I can read it on my upcoming vacation — that way I’ll have enough time to really give it my full attention.

This is compounded by the fact that the setting is decidedly very ‘out-there’ and wildly imaginative, so it can be really had to find your bearings. Yoon Ha Lee, “Ninefox Gambit” (2016) (narrated by Emily Woo Zeller) – This is the first in trilogy of scifi novels that have been making the rounds- I think all three were nominated for the Hugo for best novel but none of them won. It was very jarring and distracting because the way she says it is very robotic and so out of place it's all you can focus on.Cheris must use his knowledge of tactics to take the fortress, while guarding against any deceptions that might get her whole army killed. The hexarchate’s demand for obedience and conformity begs comparison to colonial forms of government and expectations of assimilation among its new populace and intolerance of deviations that, by virtue of being deviations, represent disloyalty and heresy against those in charge.

The boards of these lettered copies are 3000gsm, a thicker, denser board compared to the numbered copies.Meaningless cards, tokens, and symbols become invested with value and significance in the world of the game. Given that I just said I had to take a long break before picking up the next book, I can’t say that Ninefox Gambit is “entertaining” in a light-hearted way.

Jason Sheehan is an ex-chef, a former restaurant critic and the current food editor of Philadelphia magazine. In a sense, all calendrical warfare is a game between competing sets of rules, fueled by the coherence of our beliefs. It is also a bit grim with an extraordinary amount of graphic violence and gore as it is centred on the military and war.Ninefox Gambit is covered in a dark blue Metallium cloth, Raven Stratagem a green Metallium cloth and Revenant Gun a light purple Metallium cloth. Anytime someone would talk about the math of their formations and the powers they can use because of it, I just assume it was magic because it acts the same way.

If you’re looking for crunchy space fleet combat, crunchy small-unit tactics, light-hearted hijinks, or uncomplicated heroics, this probably isn’t the system for you.

His first chapter has gorgeous prose and lets me develop a good sense of Cheris as a character, all the while dropping unexplained world-specific terms.
