About this deal

It’s because when you add sensitivity, or the actual compression to the clean signal, it really tightens up the tone.

This pedal delivers the iconic Dyna Comp Compressor sound in bass-friendly form thanks to a Clean control for maintaining low end integrity and a Tone control to adjust your upper midrange to retain playing dynamics. Generally speaking, I found that having the Dyna Comp before all of these pedals left the effects unaffected, and only impacted my tone, which is what I wanted. So, with MXR having joined the new wave of ‘blend knob’ compressors, once I decided to revisit the squishy-squashy world of compression it was natural that I would start with the MXR Dyna Comp Deluxe. This makes the pedal ideal for country lead lines, and makes it a killer weapon for funk playing anywhere on the neck. Drawing from one of the most popular compression pedals of all time, the vintage Dyna Comp, the MXR Dyna Comp Reissue is missing a few key components of the original -- but also offers some great modern updates.

Set and forget squash that used to be one of the few pedals I couldn't do without in the recording studio. MXR also produces a 'vintage' Dyna Comp, with the 1970s "script" logo, and an updated version, the Super Comp, which has an "Attack" control that determines its "bite-/squash ratio". I am really inspired to plug this in again after replying to a compressor thread in the guitar forum! Actually the pedal operates more like a limiter than a true compressor as it mediates volume differences between notes to provide more consistent note-to-note output primarily by reducing the gain of attack transients, although it also amplifies weak signals slightly to improve sustain. If I had a bunch of other compression controls available (attack etc) then I'd only spend all my time tweaking instead of actually playing my damn guitar.

After the midrange test, I knew that I would really have to push this pedal if I wanted to feel a difference with a full-on distortion sound.

This pedal can be powered by a 9-volt battery, a Dunlop ECB003 9-volt adapter, or the DC Brick™, Iso-Brick™, and Mini Iso-Brick™ power supplies (not included). This phrase has entered into common speech and is applied to anything that is seen as no-nonsense or self-explanatory. He is a 40-year music industry veteran who started at Boardwalk Entertainment (Joan Jett, Night Ranger) and Roland US before becoming a guitar journalist in 1991. To my ears it sounds like a classic Dyna Comp in that it’s a pretty unsubtle compressor that gives your tone an added fatness and significantly increases the sustain.

For these reasons, the Dyna Comp Compressor has been the secret weapon on countless pedalboards for years. It has two controls: "Output" controls the output level, and "Sensitivity" determines the amount of compression. The effect’s distinctive “squish” gave character to Andy Summers’ percussive chords, heard to great effect on the Police’s Walking on the Moon. Thanks to its bypass status LED and AC power jack, you can put this pedal right on your board without worrying about whether the pedal is on or about to lose power. The Dyna Comp Mini Compressor combines the best of classic tone and modern convenience in a housing that’s nearly half the size of the original.
