The resulting bourbon is bottled at a reasonable 43% ABV and does not provide an age statement, which means future batches could dip below that 8 year-old mark. There’s some astringency as the main flavor marker at the midpalate, but overall this remains watery and weak.

I also don’t like to completely kill beloved bottles like this, so I had to have a backup bottle to tag David in.

The supply of the manufacturers via the network of wholesalers and intermediaries also harbours uncertainties and sometimes unintentionally incorrect information. I couldn’t quite trust what I was tasting, especially after finishing a generous pour of that Master’s Keep. I figured another Chicago summer had passed and this holiday was a perfect time to check in on my experiment. Their creation - a small batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon, refined with American Oak and Texas mesquite charcoals - was named Longbranch, a reference to an extension of a hand or an invitation for friends to become family. What if Kentucky took a roadtrip to Texas and introduced its very own small batch bourbon to some Texas mesquite. We’ll firmly ignore the fact that McConaughey is actually on payroll at Wild Turkey as Creative Director. Made using Wild Turkey bourbon aged for eight years, Longbranch is a collaboration between Wild Turkey’s Master Distiller Eddie Russell and the brand’s Creative Director, award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey. The addition of these ingredients creates a smoothness and subtle sweetness that sets Longbranch apart from other whiskeys.

This Kentucky-made product is blended with Texas mesquite and oak charcoal to create a unique flavour. The result is a quality and well balanced bourbon that is both sweet and a little smoky, rich and rounded.It's pretty well balanced, sweet, fresh and just enough spice to make it worth going back for another sip. Overly sweet, wood driven and spicy, bourbons definitely just never feel as complex as single malts or single pot stills (cue the Bourbon Pitchfork Brigade! Having not tasted the original, unaltered bottle of Longbranch, it’s hard for me to say whether the experiment was a success. I like how closely this hews to the Wild Turkey profile on the nose, though the palate mostly underdelivers, which I will attribute to the dilution down to 86 proof (43% ABV).
