This latest form of rebirth is in the new game The Goonies: Never Say Die and from the moment I looked at the cover I was hopeful that playing it would make me feel the same way watching the movie once did. The GM’s main goal is to gain points by defeating goonies and stopping them from completing their secret goal which only the GM knows. The cards come in assorted sizes but do a really good job of using style, size, and color to help keep track of which card is which. Kids will love hunting for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure with this Family Strategy Board Game from The Goonies range.

Never fear, an expansion where you can do just that and go on additional adventures is in the works. There was one puzzle that we solved in a way that wasn’t expected by the game which was interesting. It’s not a very long rulebook at 16 pages, but make sure to read it cover to cover a couple times if you want to avoid mistakes like mine.

Things that, sadly, have been a problem with the previous Coded Chronicles games, that I’m really glad didn’t happen in this one. There is a pit trap with many nostalgic property based games that look enticing but fall flat once you play. Without spoiling anything specific (and since the miniatures that come with the game aren’t hidden information), the bosses include the Fratellis, a giant octopus, and the ghost of One-Eyed-Willie himself.

It’s not necessarily broken, but the game doesn’t scale very well in terms of its difficulty even if the fun remains the same regardless of player count. The movie on my screen was 1985’s The Goonies, one of the many relics from my childhood now being reborn to rake in bundles of nostalgia-fueled cash. Some of the puzzles we got almost instantly while others that took us quite some time to figure out. Treasures are only discarded if their description says to discard, but some Treasures may require an Action to use.
