And some of the set pieces fall rather flat due to the somewhat breathless tone of the writing (the confrontation with the Absalom's captain and the scene with Gaunt and the woman at the end being the main examples I can think of). The novels fall into a series of four-story arcs, of which three have been completed while publication of the last is still ongoing.
