About this deal

This entire novel is on the shoulders of our protagonist and I applaud the author for writing Lousie as both vulnerable and insecure and strong as hell. Goodreads Librarians are volunteers who help ensure the accuracy of information about books and authors in the Goodreads' catalog. The idea that Louise would risk the life of her child and herself and keep the information from police beggars belief.

As the coffee machine hums its everyday tune, I half-listen to the news on the radio, which chatters all day every day in my kitchen: a sporting victory, a cabinet re-shuffle, a fifteen year-old girl who has killed herself after her boyfriend posted naked pictures of her online. I thought this was done very well, the two stories unraveling at the same time, both of them kept me on the edge and kept me trying to figure this all out (and I never did). I flinch at the thought of it, sympathy for her mixed with a shameful gratitude that there were no camera phones around when I was that age. Not just suspenseful, it also has great dialogue and the issues brought up are so relevant to what's happening in the world today. With her mesmerizing debut, Laura Marshall offers a timely and essential story of how who we were shapes who we become, the hidden cost of our increasingly connected world, and the dangerous shape that revenge can take in our modern era.Just as most of us have an online presence, whether it be FB, Twitter, Instagram or any one of the many other social platforms available out there. All in all this was an excellent read where I both detested Louise, but also rooted for her based on her self imprisonment.

This is a well-written book, with clues and lies that change the direction of the story more than once. It reminds me why I decided to delete my personal account, the idea of people you barely know getting such a personal glimpse into your inner sanctum and keeping in contact with everyone you ever met from high school days seems an odd thing and the perfect basis for a revenge style vendetta so I did quite enjoy the storyline. My Facebook circle is quite limited in comparison these days, I have culled the list of friends, but when I joined Facebook, I remember befriending people who I had not known much about (i. Sometimes just looking at someone's Facebook page can bring back teenage feelings, insecurities from a time when all you wanted was to be liked.I sit there amidst the trappings of my very comfortable, very middle-class, nearly middle-aged life. Alongside books, puzzles, films and cooking, it is a form of an escapism, which I define as a positive thing, as it allows me to recharge the batteries. She's been hovering at the edge of my consciousness for all of my adult life, although I've been good at keeping her out, just a blurred shadow in the corner of my eye, almost but not quite out of sight.

Whether you loved them or loathed them, their impact on your life can last well beyond the 13 years you actually have to attend. The kitchen gadgets and the photo on the fancy fridge of me and Henry on our first holiday alone last summer, a selfie taken by the pool: our skin salty and sun-kissed, a shadow around Henry’s mouth where the dust has stuck to the remnants of his daily ice cream. Maria's sudden reappearance threatens it all, and forces Louise to reconnect with everyone she'd severed ties with to escape the past.Nicki came up with such an excellent ending about Maria that I was so sure she had got it right because it would have been amazing!
