It’s a very obvious point, really, but shifting vinyl records in massive units is only one step away from shifting vinyl trousers, isn’t it? I think the author has done a great job of explaining the history and background of the UK (and especially London) at the time, the scene, music and circumstance leading to punk, however the book starts off slowly with some very in depth political chapters about obscure beliefs and fringe groups. Punk will be remembered for its uncompromising voice, its savage energy, and 'I don't give a damn' portrayal.

From classic era punk tracks of the 70's through to ska and new wave into the 80's and some hand picked brilliant indie tracks into the 90's, England's Dreaming perform a 2 hour live music frenzy to suit all ages that you'll remember for years to come. I think if I’d have read it in Hull, or Amsterdam, or, I don’t know, India, it would never have had the same impact on me. Having been there (but hardly 'in' them) I found his book to be absolutely fair and very astute in it's analysis. You have to wonder what Liz and Phil were thinking when they gave their son and heir the name Charles. It’s a very honest account of who he is as a person, his ease with the highs and lows of popular culture.I’d talk to people who loved the monarchy, but insisted that when Elizabeth died the succession would skip Charles entirely and pass on straight to his son. Charles and Camilla, forced to be apart but desperate to be together, against all custom and authority, helplessly in love. He didn’t care about the Queen, he cared about his mother , and all the ritual only made him more miserable. I realise that even the briefest of historical moments can be long and winding when written about, and I appreciated all the precursory info about McLaren and Sex, and the most enjoyable for me was middle of the book, the section about the Pistols forming and gathering momentum; punk gathering momentum. We are a nation of beetroot-red men who live in poky new-build houses as orange as a newborn baby’s turds.

It was a platform from which to get into the minds of more or less every teenager in the land simultaneously; it actually makes social media seem a bit limited in terms of its reach. There are stories of amphetamine use, the sheer joy of provoking a reaction, violence at early gigs and being banned from just about everywhere. Jon Savage’s 1991 book England’s Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond was hailed by the New York Times Book Review as ‘the definitive history of the English punk movement. I first read it at a point in my life when I had no idea how I was going to occupy myself for the next week, let alone the next 30 years. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. They were banned; they weren’t allowed to play and the media and the establishment conspired to shut them up for telling the truth. A magnificent eight-minute military flypast, featuring sixty aircraft including a squadron of Second World War Spitfires, was cancelled due to the weather.

Hundreds of men in deeply silly outfits marched slowly, incredibly slowly, down a totally unremarkable country road. Everything in the show is found in this book - including the emphasis on Steve Jones stealing kit from Bowies gig at the Hammersmith Odeon. A daunting book - 540 pages of text, two appendices, a huge index, bibliography and a review of post punk/post punk bands with the author's recommendation on what should be listened to. Jon Savage's England's Dreaming is the ultimate book on punk, its progenitors, the Sex Pistols, and their time: the late 1970s. Scarce first printing of this modern classic: the story of Punk and especially the Sex Pistols, and the years leading up to that great explosion of creativity in the UK.This an insightful record of the Sex Pistols' formation and their short and frantic career that helped change British music and challenged on aBritish society on a number of levels. Take a moment to look where you are heading to before heading straight to your chosen climbing area.
