About this deal

I only mention it because we had our chimney swept a few weeks ago with a view to starting using the fireplace again, and the sweep mentioned that if we were going to carpet the room we should have an additional vent installed in the floor. Draughtex is a squashy sausage of foam, that you cut to length then push into gaps using a blunt knife or credit card.

If you are on a small budget, then the traditional technique of papier-mâché may be the best option. I have the foam draughtex stuff and have used it in about 1/3 of the room, jute rope, wood bits and filler for the rest. Papier-mâché gap filling is best suited to areas under furnishing, rugs or carpets where it won’t be visible, if you do choose to use this method throughout the room then make sure to push the papier-mâché right to the bottom of the gap to remove it from sight. Punching the nails in wasn't without it's hazards either especially if electric cables passing through the joists below were in the top third of the joist. Apart from destroying the patina, the surface can be destabilised – for example wood-boring beetle larvae may have been busy tunnelling below the surface and if you take off the top layer the unsightly, worm-ridden wood will be on view.

This is another popular DIY option, but the sealant can fall through floorboard gaps if you don’t plug them first. If your skirtings are not get fitted then you have more options to solve this issue in a vareiety of ways, draught excluder on the bottom edge being one of them! Air is coming through the gap in the skirting board which leads to the void/basement underneath - and that's getting a nice funnel of cold air from the the air bricks. If you are lucky and the floorboards run parallel with the external wall, you can take up a couple of boards next to the wall, which is usually the worst source of draughts, especially if there is the little roof of a porch or bay window against it and the builders left it gappy. It can also be compressed into floor gaps much smaller than its original profile, enabling you to fill even the smallest of gaps in floorboards.

Its flexible properties allow DraughtEx to be applied to a wide range of gaps that will be completely sealed. As a plumber, my nemesis is normally the plasterer who covers all my lovely new pipes and fittings in plaster. DraughtEx is designed to expand and contract with the movement pattern of the timber and will therefore remain in place, retaining the insulation and preventing cold draughts. During this time the floorboards will be at their smallest, meaning that the gaps between them will be at their largest.A candle creates its own updraught so it will be fairly insensitive to down draughts, especially if it is spread across a wide area rather than concentrated into a narrow crack. Cold air naturally circulates below ground floor floorboards, and the small gaps between boards in an average-sized room add up to the equivalent of a small window.

DraughtEx floorboard gap filler has been cleverly manufactured with thousands of tiny, concealed air pockets which allow it to be compressed by almost 90% of its original profile. Our simple step-by-step installation instructions on how to fill floor gaps are easy to follow and will ensure you get a perfect finish. Very happy with results and room is so much warmer We have had problems with cold air blowing up between the gaps in the boards. Cold draughts created by the gaps between floorboards can lead to chilly and uncomfortable rooms and increased heating bills during the winter months.I bought a set of sealant smoothing tools by 'No Nonsense' to get a perfect finish and personally wouln't attempt it without these cos its a messy job! Few floorings will add as much personality and elegance to any room, with just a little loving care. for 1kg) for convenience, but powdered adhesive is even cheaper – with enough time and enough shredded newspapers you could plug every gap in the house for a few pounds.
