About this deal

Conceived, produced, and directed by Tippett—the practical-effects artist behind the animated chessboard in Star Wars, the tauntauns and AT-ATs of The Empire Strikes Back, the 400-year-old Vermithrax Pejorative of Dragonslayer, and OCP’s ED-209 enforcer from RoboCop—over the course of three decades and with the help of volunteer animators at Tippett Studio, fellow ILM alum Dennis Muren, students from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and the financial support of a wildly-successful Kickstarter campaign, Mad God is a singular work of both genius and madness. Featuring seven members from Mad God , one might think there would be a sensory overload from all the participants. Located in London, FilmJuice in 2011, it has a remit to provide high quality, up-to-date easily accessible wealth of information for the film fan. There’s a lot of bonus stuff on the disc, starting with a commentary with Tippett and Guillermo del Toro, a cast and crew commentary, a couple of interviews with Tippett, and a fun segment where the director lists his influences—and forgets a couple until right at the end. Then we see a figure in what looks like an old-fashioned diving bell being slowly lowered down a shaft filled with fossilized bones.

this was made with the help and participation of countless Tippett friends, contemporaries, and contributors. There’s also a piece on the collaboration between the project and Academy of Art University, a moody behind-the-scenes montage, and a gallery of behind-the-scenes images. Every once in a while he would shoot a snippet or two, but he didn’t have the money to continue so dropped it, and was soon quite busy with Hollywood work.com is an Introducer Appointed Representative of Pay4Later Limited, trading as Deko, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 728646). First started in 1987, over thirty years in the making and the subject of much talk, rumour and speculation, Phil Tippett’s Mad God was certainly one of the most anticipated screenings at this year’s Fantasia. There are some human actors to be seen, most notably mad director Alex Cox ( Repo Man, Tombstone Rashomon), but they are few and very far between. Follow The Assassin through a forbidding world of tortured souls, decrepit bunkers, and wretched monstrosities forged from the most primordial horrors of the subconscious mind.

Footage of a tower, possibly the Tower of Babel, being swallowed by black clouds and a scroll with an excerpt from the Bible’s Book of Leviticus promising all manner of divine punishment set the tone for Mad God before the title drops. Mad God is a film that is easy to recommend since it has something for everyone: it is a stop motion animation; an ambitious personal project over thirty years in the making; a gross horror film; a shining example of pure visual storytelling; a particularly squelchy take on dystopia; and rich with damning anti-capitalist themes. There’s a mutual respect here, and an artistic shorthand, that really lends itself to a deep thematic discussion of the material and the process of making it.
