About this deal

So, overall I liked the idea of the plot and the ongoing story of Evan Smoke, and I find the composition to be of a high standard, but the experience as a whole left me feeling underwhelmed. Like the previous 7 books, The Last Orphan is a topnotch thriller with literally something for everyone.

However, the plot is now circling back and recycling the President thing and a few other other themes I wont reveal.

The Last Orphan, Book 8 in The Orphan X series, finds Evan out of his comfort zone as he is forced to take on a case in exchange for his freedom. Just when I thought the Orphan X novels couldn’t get any better, Gregg Hurwitz takes the series to an even higher level. After solving a cold case killing at the Lobbyists mansion, he decides that the Lobbyist does not deserve to die but that all of his security details do, so he spends the rest of the book killing them one by one in increasingly gruesome ways. Were it not for Jack Johns, Evan’s handler and father figure, the Program would likely have been successful in extinguishing his humanity. But it’s very hard to stick to the rules when the eighth book in a series you’ve always been drawn to lands on your doormat.

Hurwitz has created a series that cannot be pigeonholed into a single genre and appeals to readers across a range of genres.

I can say so much that one part of the final chapter has a surprising twist for one of the most powerful people in the world. Accidentally having listened to the 7th book in the series before reading the rest, I liked it but some of the characters annoyed me. As Ray Porter is the voice of Joe Ledger to me, Scott Brick is the voice of Evan Smoak aka Orphan X. Additionally, he’s sold scripts to many of the major studios, and written, developed, and produced television for various networks.

Should he kill Luke Divine for the President and his personal freedom even though Divine doesn't fit the usual profile of the "bad guys" he seeks? A definite strength, with each book in the Orphan series, is in the dialogue - this can make or break a book, but Horowitz has a definite knack for expanding the development of a character through the way he/she speaks. As I progressed through the series I became more and more invested in these characters, and this installment plays upon those feelings. But not before he himself was in a hairy situation after being cornered to do yet another work for the POTUS.The narrator, soon established as Elliot Chase, then zooms out to address the reader directly, introducing the players—most importantly movie star Lana Farrar.
