This is a book for people who teach the Bible--for people who seek to interpret and apply the Scriptures with confidence. That is, how does one distill one's insights about a text into a coherent message that best fits what one's listeners need to hear. Dan Doriani’s Getting the Message: A Plan for Interpreting and Applying the Bible has been used by teenagers, college students, seminarians, and Christian ministry leaders on every inhabited continent. International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions. I have been on something of a quest to find the right book to use in an adult Sunday School class on biblical interpretation and application.

After solving their first case, Lucky Six get a taste for sleuthing and put their teamwork skills to the test time and time again as they solve a range of exciting mysteries. I raised the question with Better World Books and although they could not supply a hardcover version they were extremely generous in making up for the descepency. I'm not a big fan of mnemonic acronyms because I often remember the acronym and not what it is intended to stand for, and because adherence to an acronym sometimes necessitates choosing terms that don't exactly fit (for instance, Doriani admits that application would have been a better label than Obligations for that particular section of the book). In the acronym CAPTOR, each letter stands for a phase of interpretation: C = Context, A = Analysis, P = Problems, T = Themes, O = Obligations, R = Reflection. When people with iPhones and Android phones text each other, Apple relies on SMS and MMS, outdated systems which do not always support texting over wi-fi. For all those who fear that the Bible is a mysterious labyrinth through which they cannot find their way, Doriani provides wonderful guidance. With his usual clarity and skill, Doriani shows us how to move from studying a passage to teaching it with integrity, power, conviction, and, most of all, with a heart for the glory of God.Just outside London, at the Verity Lang Academy for the Performing Arts, (a famous boarding school that attracts talented students from all over the world) are six teenage friends from diverse backgrounds who form up-and-coming band Lucky Six. While this book still isn't quite perfect, it stands head and shoulders above the other dozen or so books I have read on the topic in the past year. The book is organized wonderfully with summaries and sections so that the information is easily accessible at a later time.
