About this deal

I thought it was really interesting to see Fitz navigate it as Prince FitzChivalry, rather than as Chivalry’s bastard, Tom Badgerlock, or Lord Feldspar of Spiretop. He is no longer capable of what he once was, and it takes the advice of his old mentor, and trusted friend, Chade, to make him realise that the only way to get Bee back is through the cold and calculated approach of an assassin. I really enjoy it when Hobb manages to weave various plotlines together from previous series and the Rain Wild books and the events within them definitely have a big part to play in the latter half of this book so you get to see what has happened since the ending of their story to some of the characters from that Rain Wilds, and also exactly how they tie into the larger arc of Fitz. Can Fitz bear to take up the tools of his old trade again, even to avenge his dearest friend and save his child? Question: Am I still one of the evil people for coming here even though I don’t actually read the post?

I won't reveal and ruin it for others; but a number of times I laughed out loud, cried a bit, reread passages just to enjoy it again. Fitz finds the Servants camp in disarray with many of the soldiers dead - apparently killed each other - some of the Servants dead and Bee and Shun gone. After nearly killing his oldest friend, the Fool, and finding his daughter stolen away by those who were once targeting the Fool, FitzChivarly Farseer is out for blood. If it’s anything like previous third books in these trilogies, it will be devastating and magnificent. Fitz is at Buck keep dealing with the results of mistaken identity while Bee is at Withy held captive. But they have also remained damaged, fallible, prone to overreaction, and yet enormously entertaining. And, having Fitz and the Fool reunited again was just was marvelous as in Fool's Errand (the first book in the Tawny Man trilogy) when they met again after several years apart. He is only partially successful and understands that Ellik agreed to follow the Servants and help them find the Unexpected Son for gold and in hope of regaining his status as heir to the Chaldean throne. Robin Hobb weaves a tale so heart-breaking and intricate that you cannot help but turn the page to see what happens. Also, Bee convincing her captors that Shun is essential just about broke me 😭 Gimme that Shun arc, Robin Hobb, because if anyone has ever needed development, it’s her!

This part of the adventure is by now one of the most emotionally pain-wrecked pieces of the novels and it gets even worse when we discover how and why he's unable to find her. FitzVigilant is finally proving himself is awesome, I like the new Shun, I hated what lead this on though. Now, betrayed by his own people and broken by torment, the Fool has made his way back to the Six Duchies. Once more we follow FitzChivalry, and now his little daughter Bee, through the world of the six duchess beginning where Fool's Assassin left off.

I’ve been waiting for this ever since picking up Ship of Magic, so the fact that Fitz and the Fool are in Kelsingra now, together with Malta, Reyn, and the dragon keepers, makes me so excited! Following directly upon the events of the previous installment (Fool's Assassin) and ending in a double-whammy of a cliffhanger. There are a handful of characters that she introduced in Fool's Assassin and built up quite a bit here, and the payoff was exceptional. I won't say evolved, because Fitz, the Fool, and Chade in particular remain as they have ever been--sharp, intelligent, impulsive, and thoughtlessly violent. And while the story takes an odd turn with about a fifth of the book to go, speeding up and jumping gears, so to speak, it is done in just such a way as to fall perfectly in line with the character whose point of view overseas the jump. Hmmmmm… If the Servants hadn’t been so needlessly cruel to the people of Withywoods, these descriptions of the Fool as a child might actually make me start to doubt him. I want to know why the Servants want to destroy the dragons so badly and how them kidnapping Bee will shape the future!
