About this deal

This is because when we are self-deceived, we must constantly look for self-justification to support our distorted worldview. He thinks he should've gotten from bed and calm down the child, but he didn't - hoping that his wife would do that. I do not think this book is for everyone, but more for the people that feel like they have tried a lot of approaches and have not found the success or the correct advice just yet. It demonstrates the negative impact this self-deception has on our lives, but also shows a way out of this state, benefiting both our private and professional lives.

Living the material" section is clean, short, void of all business jargon, and beautifully written to boot. The book presents relatable stories and practical tools to help readers identify and overcome self-deception. Still it is worth a quick, skimming-through-it read to get the key messages and to see where you are falling into these traps as a leader. Leadership and Self-Deception explains that this mentality is in fact a form of self-deception, and very harmful to our private and professional lives.

It's highly addictive to get core insights on personally relevant topics without repetition or triviality. In situations where you’re unwilling to try to remember someone’s name, it’s a clue that you may be self-deceived and viewing that person as an object. For example, imagine you are having a ferocious argument with your spouse when you realize that you will soon be late for work.

Probably your first, natural instinct will be to get up and calm your baby quickly before your spouse wakes up, because you care about your spouse and don’t want to disturb their sleep too. I can pick up any other psychology or spirituality book written from an academic standpoint and learn in 2 chapters what this book stretched out for 200 pages. To keep this up, you must simply keep honoring that first instinct you have to help and be kind to others. This means that our self-deception has an impact on those around us as well, and can in fact spread like a virus.

Self-deception—our tendency to see the world around us in a distorted way—is a common personal and organizational problem. There is lots in this book about treating others as people, and of taking personal responsibility for the things that happen in your life. An out-of-the-box view: On another trip, Bud and his wife were traveling together but couldn’t find adjoining empty seats. Its insights are applicable to both professional and personal relationships, leading to improved communication and understanding.
