This story is listed as Historical Fantasy and as much as I like Historical novels, Fantasy doesn't always work for me. It inhabits a bit of so many genres, from historical, to fantasy, mystery and romance so seamlessly and beautifully that fans of each can relish every word! At first, the writing might seem a bit confusing and disjointed, as the author explores two completely disparate people, in completely different countries. I was surprised how easily I could accept this alternate world which was very much like ours but also very different from ours. This book is told from the past and the present with some great twist and turns that I did not see coming, can't wait for the next book.

One of the best reads of this year, so happy there will be more stories of this fantastic gang, Heir of Uncertain Magic. Instead of lugging the hardcover of Iron Flame along on my ski trip to Montana, I uploaded this eBook. Keeper of Enchanted Rooms takes place in the mid-1800s, mainly in Rhode Island, but there are scenes set in England. Keeper of Enchanted Rooms is fun story that starts out delightful and whimsical, and slowly turns slightly darker and more serious, but overall an enchanted read set in a world that mirrors our own except that magic is a part of life… and sometimes houses.I realize it fits with the time period, which is why I'm very glad we're no longer living in those antiquated times!

The rest of the book was so perfect, why leave us without the cherry that tops such a wonderful story? Adore a book with loveable characters (Project Hail Mary, Remarkably Bright Creatures), and here’s another book that ticked that box.Likable characters, unique and interesting magic systems, and a very special, very delightful sense of charm that wiggles under your skin and hooks you tight are some of Charlie N. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. I can’t say too much about the enchanted house without spoiling anything, but suffice it to say Holmberg does such a great job of writing in fun little quirks of magic. The main plot arc takes some meandering twists and turns, slowly revealing the horror of the identity of the villain and his nefarious ambitions, but ultimately comes to an exciting climax and conclusion.

I really enjoy the unique magic system - although I will admit, I just scanned all the various magical talents that are listed in the beginning (it's a bit confusing) and referred back to them when they were mentioned. The good guys are sweet and adorable, the bad guys are evil and yet you see how they got there and can empathize, the other characters have enough depth that you want to know more of their stories in later books. Holmberg…has a deft hand portraying internal emotional responses…Keeper of Enchanted Rooms combines lighthearted entertainment and nail-biting excitement. There is a listing at the very beginning of the story that sorts out the different kinds of magic in this world, but I skipped it and went right to the prologue, learning as I went and as Hulda’s investigation proceeded. There are magics in the house and at first it seems to resent the presence of the new owner but things change over time and as the back stories of the house, the owner, the housekeeper and the previous residents are revealed so to are new challenges to be overcome and evil from the past resurfaces to threaten their lives.

The moment I read what it was about I knew I was going to love it, but I didn't think I’d enjoy it quite this much. Merritt and Hulda are fantastic together, him so messy and disorganized, her so strictly controlled and structured. The blend of magic, mystery and romance was better than I could've hoped for, and I can't wait for the next book in the Whimbrel House series. The characters' past are also revealed to one other in a more subtle and genuine approach than all at once.

And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern—something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within. Her imagination is wonderful, so I would actually consider another title from her, but not if it’s HF. Unbeknownst to Merritt, Hulda Larkin, a valuable employee of the ‘Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms’ (BIKER! This is Charlie at her best—intriguing mystery, creative magic systems, with plenty of romance to keep me turning the pages.

This mostly lovely "family", house, and island made me want to stay in this world but something, someone is planning to destroy it. I don’t like books placed in America, and I don’t like eras after Regency, and I still loved this book. Slight spoiler ahead in the relationship area** The story ended without Hulda ever speaking her feelings where Merritt is concerned. A trio of narrators makes this lighthearted historical fantasy with touches of mystery and romance a delight. He will be more or less swallowed by an evil enchanted house, the lavatory nearly skewers him, real rats and rains fake blood.
