However I can't fault the content: the cast are thoroughly enjoying themselves and the director says it's the best script for young people she's ever come across. Coulter herself, rather than from the gyptians—is so emotionally compelling that the otherwise lackluster film version used it too. In December 2003, The National Theatre in London presented a stage version of the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman in two, three hour long parts, performed back to back or on separate nights, directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Nicholas Wright. This adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, by Nicholas Wright, was first performed at the National Theatre in London in 2003. On a cerebral plane, the plays are a constantly evolving thesis on the nature of humanity and the meaning of faith.

In an online June 2007 poll, it was voted the best Carnegie Medal winner in the 70-year history of the award, the Carnegie of Carnegies. Pullman and Williams took part in a National Theatre platform debate a few days later to discuss myth, religious experience, and its representation in the arts. One significant difference is that Dr Mary Malone and her amber spyglass do not appear, with the role of the serpent being taken by Serafina Pekkala.Eventually, the dead are released from captivity on condition they tell true stories about everything they loved in life. A HBO/BBC television series based on the novels was broadcast between November 2019 and February 2023. This was great as it meant people (particularly those new to the company) didn't feel put on the spot, allowing them to try out all the ideas. The beginning of Part One suffers from information overkill - facts and names thrown out like javelins - but get past this and things quickly improve.

An additional issue has been how quickly the story moves - there's relatively little time in any given scene to allow for a protracted musical interlude. Scoresby finds him living as a shaman under the name Jopari and he turns out to be Will's father, John Parry. In the stage adaptations, the focus of the action is very firmly on Lyra and Will, so an early decision was to include the actors playing these roles in the design.

A witch who seeks revenge for her son's death in the war against the Authority draws Lyra, now 15, into a trap. Probably the most egregious change is that Mary Malone is missing, but, and I hate to say it, for me, using Serafina as the snake worked just as well. What is inescapable is that 'The Church' are the bad guys of the piece; dogmatic, zealous, ruthless, murderers, torturers and utterly unforgiving. For Lyra and Will, its two central characters, it’s a coming of age and a transforming spiritual experience. Our main advantage, I thought, was that whilst we could in no way rival the sheer scale of the National production, the intimate nature of our venue lent itself to connecting more tellingly with the emotional heart of the story. His Dark Materials is a trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman consisting of Northern Lights (1995; published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife (1997), and The Amber Spyglass (2000). His Dark Materials' was adapted as a play from the Phillip Pullman fantasy novel trilogy of the same title.

Adjoa Andoh’s Serafina Pekkala was just perfect though, in a slightly expanded role, Elliot Levey’s cleric was suitably creepy, David Harewood’s Lord Asriel nicely aristocratic and Lesley Manville’s Mrs Coulter was a brilliantly tight ball of malevolent love, matching my thoughts of how the role should be portrayed very well.Similarly the eponymous amber spyglass of the third novel, associated with Malone, is also largely absent.
