About this deal

A gifted cellist he was studying in Germany and was destined to become a professional musician until the outbreak of the First World War. Although Olga wanted to give up her job with MI5 Knight managed to persuade her to stay on until Glading was in the net.

Liddell had also been seen drinking with other suspects Philby and Anthony Blunt in a pub in Chelsea. The diaries, made available online from the National Archives on Friday, cover the period when evidence emerged of the treachery within the British establishment in the form of the men - who would become known as the Cambridge Spies - who had spied for the Soviet Union. He died of heart failure aged 66 in 1958 at his home, 18 Richmond Court, Sloane Street, London, and was buried at Putney Vale Cemetery. This included secret assurances that the United States would support France if it was invaded by the German Army. Arriving back in 1930 he worked in the CP's colonial department, which meant in practise that he carried Comintern cash and messages to India. His agent, Duško Popov, provided an Abwehr questionnaire suggesting that the Japanese Air Force planned to attack the United States at Pearl Harbor.

Liddell was born in Madras (Chennai) on 8th November 1868, as second son of William Byam Liddell, a tea-planter and merchant also born there in 1836 (d. This book is the first volume of a 2 volume set, and covers the period from August 28th, 1939 (when it was clear that war with Germany was probably days away) to September 30th, 1942.

This is the first time the genuine operational diary of a senior intelligence officer has ever been released. The diaries contain disastrously inaccurate information from the secret intelligence service MI6, suggesting its agents in turn may have been compromised by the Nazi secret service. Rupert Allason (2018) (writing as "Nigel West") [10] made no suggestion that Liddell had been responsible for any treachery, and in fact, claimed that he "was betrayed by Burgess, Blunt, and Philby".

They invented a power-driven lithographic printing press in 1853 and were believed to be the first in the UK to use steam-power for lithographic printing, notably of stamps: in 1886, under Joan’s brother Frank, the firm became ‘Ornamental Printers to the Queen’ and it survived until taken over in 1992. Glading also arranged for several people working at Woolwich Arsenal, to take pictures of blueprints of weapons being developed. WALLFLOWERS is the codename given to one of the Security Service’s most treasured possessions, the daily journal dictated from August 1939 to June 1945 by MI5’s Director of Counter-Espionage, Guy Liddell, to his secretary, Margo Huggins.Guy Maynard Liddell, the son of Augustus Frederick Liddell, a retired captain in the Royal Artillery, and his wife, Emily Shinner, was born on 8th November 1892.

Surprisingly he did not notify the White House or the US Office of Naval Intelligence about this plan.

The diaries reveal how MI5 recruited its first double-cross agent, Arthur Owens, a Welsh electrical engineer codenamed 'Snow' who was caught spying for the Germans and held at Wormwood Scrubs. Why he would want to banish his sharpest counter-espionage officer, and replace her with the second-rate Roger Hollis – not the move of a ‘remarkable and accomplished professional’ – is something that defies logic.
