While that alone makes this book a standout, John Sessions’ delightful brogue and skillful reading takes the story over the top. The victim's mount while Detective Logan sets to work finding the perpetrators in spite of all the obstacles thrown in front of him by Steel. But one botched raid later he's palmed off on a DI everyone knows is a jinx, waiting for the axe to fall with all the other rejects in the 'Screw-up Squad'.Jackie, his WPC squeeze is mad at him for not standing up to Steele who never seems to recognize his time off.

Logan is a compelling protagonist who escapes the faults given to so many fictional police heroes, that of despair, drunkenness, and/or complete cynicism.

Logan McRae is a likeable character but has a lot to put up with as he's constantly pulled between two senior officers, trying to solve several different cases including a serial killer who's beating and murdering prostitutes. I've not read such a gritty and humorous crime series like this before where I could compare it to anything else.
