The amazing Lijjat Papad story: from Rs 80 to Rs 800 crore". Yahoo Finance. 4 September 2017 . Retrieved 2 October 2018. Following Mother Teresa's guidance, some organization members volunteered for Asha Dhan, an institute that cares for needy women. For centuries, making papad was carried out in cottage industries (small, family-based manufacturing units) that were spread around the country. The techniques used for making the wafer, furthermore, were passed down from mother to daughter in Indian households as a form of traditional knowledge. Lijjat started out as a cottage industry in an urban area, but spread to the rural areas. [3] It is considered one of the most remarkable entrepreneurial initiatives by women that is identified with female empowerment in India. [4] Due to standardization in the Papad, 4.8 Billion Papads made by 45,000 Lijjat sisters all over India with similar tastes. The Concept of Family They do not just see themselves as a working body but rather as a large family. Familial affection, mutual concern and respect, is encouraged among the member-sisters and the entire organization in general.

To counter such cases of infringement, Lijjat not only relies on the relevant national authorities to prosecute those accused of wrongdoing; the cooperative also actively educates customers and clients on how to detect and prevent violation of its IP. In subsequent years, special buses would be mobilized to transport Lijjat’s workers to and from their homes – thereby improving productivity and efficiency outcomes. Their efforts are appreciated and rewarded by the company. For example, in 2002, the employees in Rajkot got an incentive of Rs 4,000 each. Meanwhile, bens at Mumbai and Thane branches were given 5-gram gold coins. The extraordinary taste of Rajasthan cuisine is papad curry or papad ki sabji. Here we are soaking the papads in gravy and making an excellent curry. It tastes superb with Jeera(cumin) riceOutstanding Service Organization Award-2012' was awarded to Smt. Swati R. Paradkart, President of Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad by the National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIQR), Chennai The papads are sold across the country and even exported to countries like the United States, Singapore, United Kingdom, Thailand and Netherlands among others. Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad (Lijjat) is a cooperative established by Indian women that has developed a unique model for development and empowerment for low income female workers. Lijjat has more than 40,000 members and 62 branches across 17 states of the Republic of India (India).

You can find papad served as a part of the meal, and in some restaurants, you can find this masala papad as an appetizer. Now you can find a variety of papad in India. Some made with urad dal, some with moong dal, some with rice and different flavors. My choice for the masala papad chaat is urad dal or moong dal papad. Please refer to the FAQ section for other details. From humble beginnings on the streets of Mumbai, Lijjat has become an internationally recognized organization helping to change the lives of thousands of women, and their families, across India. Apart from its consumers, the brand has left an everlasting mark as a proud swadeshi company that has empowered thousands of lives. This papad brand has successfully managed to be a silent yet integral part of everyone’s life in more ways than one.

Lijjat was started by seven Gujarati women from Mumbai. The women lived in Lohana Niwas, a group of five buildings in Girgaum. They wanted to start a venture to create a sustainable livelihood using the only skill they had i.e. cooking. The seven women were Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popat, Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Ujamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben. N. Tanna, Laguben Amritlal Gokani, Jayaben V. Vithalani, and Diwaliben Lukka. [5] [6] Chhaganlal Parekh, popularly known as Chaganbapa, became their guide. [3] Initially, the women were making two different qualities of papads, to sell the inferior one at a cheaper rate. Chaganbapa advised them to make a standard papad and asked them never to compromise on quality. He emphasised to them the importance of running it as a business enterprise and maintaining proper accounts. [10]Almost 62 years later, the venture that began with seven women has now turned into India’s oldest all-female cooperative that employs close to 45,000 women. Lijjat Patrika, Vl.14, Issue 8-9-10, Nov. 93- Jan.94, pp.1 and 3;Vol. 17, Issue 1, Jan.96; p.; Vol.20, Issue 7, July 1999, p.1 In the same period, the organization successfully passed an official inspection of its operations and adopted its first written constitution. In 2002, Lijjat had a turnover of Rs 3 billion and exports worth Rs. 100 million. It employed 42,000 people in 62 divisions all over the country.(2002) [6] The 62nd branch became operational at Jammu and Kashmir in 2002, enrolling over 150 members. [11]

Paradkar was honoured by Yogrishi Swami Ramdevji Maharaj for Outstanding Contribution to Society in the filed of women empowerment and welfare at a function held at Solapur Maharashtra which was organised by Patanjali Yog Samitee, Bharat Swabhiman Trust, Haridwar. But do you know what? When these women had their first board meeting, they established the fact that the primary goal of their business wouldn’t be to make money, but to empower women from the smallest households in the country, and to provide them with the livelihood to nurture their families. Crushed raw papads can be used as a coating for kebabs and tikkis, also are used to make some Gujarati subzis like Methi- Papad nu shaak, Ghatia- papad nu shaak.

It takes a village and a city

Topping/filling:Typically, we need some onions and tomatoes. But you can use veggies of your choice like grated carrots, chopped cucumber, and even raw mangoes and pomegranate arils. I have included some bell peppers.
