The nose tells you that this isn’t what one should look out for in a Highland malt with a nautical theme. Instead of a saline aspect and perhaps a whiff of smoke, it’s a fruity malt. Final Thoughts: While definitely not as smooth as the Huddart, Old Pulteney’s 12 year old single malt Scotch whiskey is wonderful and can definitely stand on its own, apart from the Huddart. The flavors are light and goes down smoother than almost any other whisky I have had. This would be a perfect whisky to offer someone who has never had whiskey, or someone who has been on the fence about whiskey. The 15 Year Old is the middle rung in the Old Pulteney line up, and in my mind it fits that roll perfectly. It’s a lovely single malt, superbly balanced, and reasonably priced (even in America). However, the odd thing about the 15 Year Old is it isn’t what one might expect from Old Pulteney, having a character a step removed from most of what the distillery does and quite a bit removed from its nautically-themed image. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh.
