Ceramic - Ceramic discs offer exceptional durability and resistance, thanks to a unique design that constantly exposes fresh grains when in use. Whilst not as strong as silicon carbide, or as cost effective as aluminium oxide, ceramic discs offer class-leading durability for medium-strength cutting jobs. Remember, safety should always come first. When using an angle grinder, wear eye protection and take extra precautions if necessary. Marking the Aluminium

Cutting discs are very narrow, resulting in minimal material removal and clean cuts - however this narrowness makes them more fragile than other types of abrasive disc. For this reason, it's important to ensure you're only cutting at 90 degree angles. While wearing gloves is an option, it is not recommended when using an angle grinder. If the glove gets caught in the angle grinder and pulls your hand into it, it could end up being counterproductive. It is best to wear safety goggles when cutting through aluminium.

Which materials can be cut with a cutting disc?

The thin design of cutting discs gives users a degree of cutting accuracy that is highly valuable in metal fabrication. Their thin profile makes them far more precise and clean cutting than equivalent grinding wheels, or other types of abrasive discs. It is important to keep a little bit of pressure towards the outside of the line to ensure that slipping out of the groove happens towards the waste side. Once the cut is complete, the waste piece can be snapped off and the aluminium can be cleaned off with a file to get a nice smooth edge. Cleaning the Cut Edge When cutting the aluminium with the angle grinder, keep it as close to the stable work surface as possible to prevent the metal from flapping up and down. Cutting the Aluminium Starting the Cut

Slitting discs require a power tool to be used effectively. An angle grinder is the most common choice.

Common Cutting Disc Diameters & Thickness'

When using an angle grinder to cut through aluminium, it is important to always wear goggles. The abrasive disc of the angle grinder causes little parts of the disc to break away as you cut, and small fragments of aluminium will splinter off as well. Wearing eye protection is essential to avoid any potential eye injuries. Mask Stone and other masonry materials cannot be cut with a metal cutting disc. Stone must be cut with a carbide cutting disc that is more durable than standard aluminium oxide discs. Once you have cut through the aluminum, use a file to clean up the cut edge. This will give you a nice smooth edge. Practically all materials can be cut with a cutting disc. The most commonly cut materials are metals. These can include steel, stainless steel & aluminium. However, some materials have their difficulties when cut, for example:

A square can be used to draw straight and square lines. I like to use a sharpie to mark metals Setting Up the Workbench Not sure about the right cutting disc for your applications? Cutting discs are universally valued for their ability to perform common cutting tasks with ease and efficiency. Commonly used in angle grinders and similar power tools, cutting discs are an invaluable asset for all kinds of industry professionals. Aluminium oxide - Aluminium oxide is the most common material used to make cutting discs. Its high strength, cost effectiveness and adaptability make it great for general usage.Cutting discs come in a number of configurations, with varying materials, sizes, and grain sizes to suit the needs of demanding professionals. All cutting discs are made from strong compounds, bonded together using powerful substances. Cutting discs are used in smaller cutting power tools, such as angle grinders and die grinders. They are invaluable for use across a large range of industrial applications and industries, including: Cutting discs are usually manufactured from fibreglass net, a material that offers abrasive properties and a bonding resin. These components are added together and then formed under a combination of pressure & heat, thus forming a disc that can be used to cut through materials.

Stainless steel: When stainless steel is cut, it must be cut with a disc that is specifically made for stainless steel. Why? Standard cutting discs contain iron, and therefore would potentially cause corrosion on the stainless steel which defeats the point of using stainless steel on a fabricated item. INOX cutting discs do not contain iron, and are therefore suitable for use on stainless steel. To achieve a nice straight cut in aluminium, the first step is to mark up the aluminium and ideally have a nice straight line to work off.
