There’s bags of atmosphere here, redolent with the earthy smells of mould – and worse – that reminded me of my own young days exploring old air raid shelters and derelict railway stations, but fortunately I was never chased out by anything worse than my own imagination, unlike the horrors that went after these kids. Tudor's novels are widely acclaimed for their dark, twisty suspense plots, but with A Sliver of Darkness, she pulls us even further into her dizzying imagination. The problem with darkness was, once you let it in, it lurked in the corners of your mind, filling them with shadows. As someone who has read all of Tudor’s published works, this is a great starting point for those that have not read her books before! From spine-tingling tales, to ones that will bring a twisted smile to your face, there are one or two you just might not want to read with the lights turned off.

Each one was unique and what I really liked is how the author mixed current events along with a mix of supernatural/horror and blended both together so well they were kinda terrifying! Many many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group / Ballantine Books for sharing this perfect digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions. Even though there were a couple I didn't fully get at the end, I think that's more due to me not being the person who figures the ending out ahead of time, and CJ may be expanding some of these in future, I think. The good news is that not only will there now be a different novel number five ("The Drift") being published in 2023, but there there is also the bonus of this volume of eleven short stories under the title, "A Sliver of Darkness" in the meantime. Final Course - (scariest IMO) “The problem with darkness was once you let it in, it lurked in the corners of your mind, filling them with shadows.A few of my favorites were "Butterfly Island", " The Lion at the Gate",⭐ "Gloria", "I'm Not Ted"⭐, "Final Course"⭐, and "End of the Liner"⭐ which was the first story in the book. This book was recommended to me by a good GR friend, and I am so glad I saved it to my spooky read list. In “Final Course,” the world has descended into darkness, but a group of old friends make time for one last dinner party. Obviously I like to be stuck in a long book rut with the same old people and places for a longer time than a short story can provide.

Tudor engineered a consistent set of nearly a dozen terse tales that keeps the reader engaged throughout the course of the book. This is a wonderfully enjoyable book and, although everyone will have their favourite stories, there are none that are included purely as fillers. The Lion at the Gate – You’ve never seen graffiti like this and if you get too close you might end up like my mates: Carl, Stiff, and Fallow. A Sliver of Darkness is a collection of eleven dark and disturbing short stories created after her last book didn’t quite make the cut. A reunion of old friends at a country house seems to offer sanctuary, but no one expects the darkness to hide in plain sight.
