About this deal

As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her! Overall her books are good at letting young children experience what can happen to others but I wouldn't worry about the effect it may have on her. I can honestly say I read the books, possibly asked a few questions but was quite happy with the basic answer I got from my mum and never gave it much thought again. It goes on to tell the story of the various care homes she has lived in, how she burgled homes in the night.

Tbh it only takes a watch of Tracy Beaker to realise they aren't all fluffy clouds and rainbows and a lot of it has real quite deep situations in. It means that children who are going through something similar, feel like somebody can understand them. But then I subscribe to the idea that childhood is a safe place to learn about what real life is going to be like, rather than a fantasy kingdom of innocence. Childrens stories have always had dark themes and if you take a subjective look they're not hard to find. Sensitive subjects bought out in the open and all that and it gave my mum a great opening to talk about this kind of thing with me! I was so shocked that it described a girl expecting a baby and being at school and having to make her excuses and eventually delivering the baby in an alleyway and putting the baby in a dustbin.

Understand I can't shelter her from the world forever, but think the dustbin baby story is potentially very upsetting. Some of Jacqueline Wilson's books are labelled 'for teen readers' on the back so keep an eye out for those. They were all very well written and some tricky issues were dealt with sensitively and appropriately. Please tick if you would like to receive news, offers and information from our trusted and carefully selected partners that we think you might like. dustbin baby was one I never got round to reading but I can imagine that your daughter won't take what she's reading in the same way as you are.

Because you have a lot more world experience everything might seem a little dark, I can imagine it would for me if I was to re-read them all now. Never known a kid be harmed by reality and if anything it will make her more aware and appreciative of what she has and what other people have to go through. I generally read a lot of children's literature and think it's really important to read books first before reading them with your children.the books to me always felt grown up and I liked that about them, they dealt with issues some friends went through in a 'nice' way. As an aside, I can't think of a single character in a Jaqueline Wilson book that we read who didn't have some sort of equivalent at his school. I honestly can't remember issues like this in the books though, and am unsure about how I feel about it now. One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker.

Explore all the adventures from renting a bridesmaid to the butterfly club with this highly acclaimed and hugely popular Jacqueline Wilson bestsellers! The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award. I'm not a fan - I'm not quite sure how she became so popular to be honest as there are many better children's authors in my opinion. Can't help thinking that if I hadn't happened to have a quick look at this one book, my daughter could have read the whole lot and read goodness knows what! In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate.I managed to get my first short story published when I was 17 – and I’ve earned my living by writing ever since.
