About this deal

You can view photos in batches of up to 72, and there is also a calendar view that organises images by date and time. This, however, introduces some shutter lag, which usually isn't worth the few decibels of difference versus what is already an impressively quiet shutter (Nikon recommends using the Quiet mode for taking pictures of sleeping babies, a situation in which a bit of shutter delay isn't a problem).

In low light, the AF sensors are helped by an AF assist lamp located on the front plate of the camera. In addition to the Auto Active D-Lighting mode added with the D700, the Nikon D5000 gets the D90's Extra High setting to add even more punch to shadow detail. As usually happens when resolution rises, limitations are revealed in the kit lenses that we once admired. Selecting the active AF point is done by way of the four-way pad - except if you choose Auto Area AF -; again a simple and intuitive solution. auto-area AF shutter lag numbers at wide angle, I noticed considerable AF lag while shooting indoors in low light situations, especially in Wide-area AF mode. The left side also has a relief for the palm, making it easier to cradle the camera while extending your fingers to turn the zoom and focus rings. We've been using a full production version of this 120 fps sports camera, to see what you gain (and, perhaps, lose). Overhead and low shooting is easy with this design, just tilt the LCD down for overhead horizontal shots, or swing it around 180 degrees for horizontal ground-level shots.

It also adds its own to the mix, in the form of an articulated rear LCD, though this is sadly compromised by the lack of proper anti-glare coating, which causes the otherwise versatile screen to be very hard to see in strong daylight. The fact that the D5000 is at least as quiet as the Leica M7 means it probably also can replace the Leica M8. The Nikon D5000 is powered by a proprietary EN-EL9a Lithium-ion battery and records videos and image files on SD/SDHC cards.Though the Nikon D5000's phase-detect autofocus speed tested very well in our lab tests, turning in 0. Though I'm not crazy about the Nikon D5000's swivel screen design, it's still nice to have on an SLR, and works pretty well in handheld shooting situations, for both video and stills.

Red-eye was not a common occurrence with the built-in flash, and when we did encounter it, it was very moderate and easily cured by setting the flash to red-eye reduction mode. As you can see from the table below the D5000 offers many of the features of the D90 and certainly represents a major step up from the D60.

Enter the info button - pressing it displays virtually all of the camera's main settings on the large rear screen, provided it is not folded inward to protect it from harm.

Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. After pressing the Lv button and optionally presetting the aperture and focus, you can start recording video by pressing the OK button sitting in the middle of the ubiquitous four-way pad. And while it's cool that you can face the screen forward for self-portraits, you lose your view when you mount the camera on a tripod. Anyone can bang on a piano and anyone can shoot a camera, but it takes an artist to get decent results from either one. If face detection is activated, the Nikon D5000 quickly begins tracking faces, placing a yellow box around each one, up to five at a time. Not only are the video images captured funny from a sensor designed for still, not moving images, the D5000 has to compress the files to fit them on the SD card.
