Description

Alongside his rich, personal experiences at Longmeadow, Monty describes the individual plants coming into their own in the floral and vegetable gardens and talks you through key tasks, from composting and lawn maintenance to topiary clipping and fruit pruning. Monty’s approach is very refreshing and it’s heartening to know that he has created such a successful garden with this attitude. His passion for gardening and the natural world are evident and he has the ability to make ordinary, daily events in the garden seem magical. I liked the added touches of a page where he talks about foraging and how the book finishes with Christmas and what are the best presents for gardeners.

I would certainly recommend this book, Monty’s enthusiasm is infectious and you don’t need to watch Gardeners’ World to find this book useful and a good read.

Following the cycle of the seasons, Gardening at Longmeadow is a year-long diary of Monty's gardening wisdom: from the earliest snowdrops of January and the first splashes of colour in the Spring Garden, to the electric summer displays of the Jewel Garden and the autumn harvest in the orchard. With beautiful photography throughout, Gardening at Longmeadow is an essential book for gardening enthusiasts of all skill levels.

It will inspire you to achieve a balanced, healthy garden of your own, that’s spilling with produce and full colour all year round. See our Remarkables Archive list for what is no longer in print, but which we are happy to track down. The Spring garden was made to relish every possibility of the season and wave after wave of flower push forward culminating in mid May with the earliest species roses and the cow parsley which then takes over completely. Invites us into the garden at Longmeadow to introduce us to the garden from the earliest snowdrops of January through the first splashes of colour in the Spring Garden, the electric summer displays of the Jewel Garden, the autumn harvest in the orchard, and on to a Christmas feast sourced from the vegetable gardens. Our goal is to always have a supply of a good choice of vegetables that we enjoy eating on every single day of the year. It has been home to the couple, their three children, and their dogs (including the much-beloved and now deceased Nigel), ever since. Longmeadow gets flooded almost every year so the ground is not wanting for much more during most of the year.
