Some come to Mykonos just to spend an afternoon at the latest generation of beach clubs, with their fabulous restaurants, shisha bars and eye-watering prices. Along with the Paradise and Super Paradise beach clubs, the best for spotting celebrities are the luxury haven Nammos on Psarou, or new age-y Scorpios and over-the-top Sant’Anna with its enormous saltwater pool, both on Paraga beach. For something quieter, try Pasaji or Hippie Fish at Agios Ioannis beach — where they filmed Shirley Valentine. Blending Cycladic traditions with a twist of modernity, Panagiotis Menardos is considered by his peers to be one of the finest chefs in the archipelago. Others on the island strive to be the most luxurious, but Menardos opted to serve quintiessential local food when he opened his restaurant in 2019. Every recipe has its roots deep in the Mykonian and Cycladic heritage and like the narrator of an epic, every year he adds a new culinary chapter to his gastronomic menu. Try the sea bass filet in a sweet and spicy tomato sauce served with baby potatoes and a freshly baked Mediterranean bruschetta, or vacuum-cooked pork fillet with a light mushroom sauce served with a parsley root puree and a rich Naxos graviera mousse. With just one exception, all the ingredients are produced in the Cyclades from the meat to the cheese. Even the shiitake are grown just a few miles away. As Mykonos doesn't produce enough lamb to meet local demand, for the bestselling dish, cooked at low temperature for 40 minutes, it has to be sourced from off the island. It is nevertheless superb. The prize exhibit in the Archaeological Museum in Mykonos Town is a large jar or pithos from the 7th century BC, covered with comic strip-style scenes from the fall of Troy, including the oldest known depiction of the Trojan horse. Surprisingly, the jar is fitted out with aeroplane windows, each revealing a Greek warrior ready to be wheeled into Troy and wreak havoc. The vases in the museum are equally vivid, many showing creatures out of Greek mythology; there’s also a fine marble headless Hercules, and poignant funeral reliefs. Platis Gialos: You’ll find Mykonos hotels practically spilling onto the sand at Platis Gialos. With boat trips, water sports and shallow water, this is a top spot for families. Located in the Cyclades and surrounded by the blue-green water of the Aegean sits whitewashed, windmill-strewn Mykonos, the island of the winds. This ancient island and those surrounding it, mythologized as the bodies of gods felled by Hercules in the time of antiquity, are older than legend and have played host to countless cultures for more than millennia. At forty-square-miles and boasting a population of only ten-thousand, the ‘Ibiza of Greece’ has become prized for gorgeous architecture, welcoming and open-minded locals, and fantastic beaches. With such names as ‘Paradise’ and ‘Super Paradise,’ the sands of these shores have captured the imaginations and hearts of industry titans, artists, and party-goers alike from all around the globe, marking it as a stable cosmopolitan destination and as a paramount it haven on the jet-set circuit.
