In the season finale, Scotty is hosting a dinner with the family revealing his new menu. While preparing in the kitchen, Saul discovers that an old partner of his is living with AIDS. Scotty and Kevin tell Saul that they get tested every year and that he should, too. Saul is defensive because he hasn't been sexually active in years and feels that he doesn't need to. Yet, Saul gets tested, and while waiting for the results, he blows up at Scotty and Kevin. He tells them that when he was growing up, the world was a lot less accepting of his lifestyle. Later on, with Nora by his side, Saul calls for his results and tells her that he's negative, and that he'll be okay. In the final car crash scene, after Kevin sees that Scotty is okay, he goes to Saul to see if he's all right. Saul has blood on his hands and face, but tells Kevin not to come closer, that he can't come closer and touch him, implying that he is HIV positive. Note: This is Ryan Lafferty's last appearance, though Luke Grimes is credited for the role throughout the remainder of the season. Saul reveals to Nora that William and Holly had a daughter, Rebecca, even though he previously agreed with Sarah, Tommy and Kevin that he won't say anything. The news is just too much for the Walker family: Nora becomes furious with Sarah, and so does Kitty. Kevin is angry at Saul and confronts him for betraying them all. Justin and Tyler decide to break up. Sarah tells Rebecca everything, leading to her confronting Holly and, eventually, Holly confronting Sarah and Saul. Justin pays Rebecca a visit. After he and Julia try for months to conceive, Tommy discovers he is sterile. They turn to Kevin and Justin for support as possible surrogates. Both brothers decide to give sperm, but never discover whose sperm is ultimately used. Everyone is thrilled when Tommy & Julia discover they are expecting twins; however, tragedy strikes when Julia goes into early labor and gives birth to a boy, William, and a girl, Elizabeth. The doctors inform the new parents that William won't make it, and that they must operate on Elizabeth or risk losing her too. Sarah is depressed after Ojai closes. She sits on her couch for three days eating pizza. Nora has her go on the campaign bus with her and Kitty. Throughout it, Sarah drinks wine and watches soap operas. Later, Sarah gets a call from Holly and they sit down and discover the water main at Narrow Lake, which she, Nora, and Holly have ownership of. Ojai will now be a water company. In the final crash scene, Sarah is shown to be okay and calls 911.

In the episode 'Love All,' Scotty and Saul begin to make plans to open their own restaurant, while Kevin begins to feel unhappy with being unemployed. He tells Scotty to go forward with the restaurant while he figures out his purpose. The character of Kevin had originally been named Bryan, and had been cast with actor Jonathan LaPaglia. Like the current Kevin character, the Bryan version of the character was also gay, but had been married, and was going through a divorce. The Bryan incarnation of the character also had a child, and he and his ex-wife were going through a custody battle. Bryan's child later reappeared during the first season as the show, where he was recast as "Gabe," Joe's child from his first marriage. After Kitty tells Robert, he thinks she should run for his seat. They put the decision to a family vote. After some initial hesitation from Kevin, who is unsure of his future in the job, they all agree that she should run. Kevin considers a relationship with a soap opera star (guest star Jason Lewis) who is confused about his sexuality. Kitty hires a matchmaker when she finds out that everyone on McCallister's staff is thinking that the two of them are dating. Nora's butting in gets her involved and the matchmaker sets her up too. But both of them get their share of surprises while attending their dates. Sarah gets insecure when she sees Joe hanging out with a mom of Paige's friend. Julia has a higher sex drive than usual due to her pregnancy and Tommy has trouble keeping up with her.

Paige feels that she needs to connect with her Jewish self, so the family plans to celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. Kevin and Justin go to court, demanding that the contract Justin has with the Army be annulled. Kitty is offered a job at the TV station without Warren. Sarah, Tommy and Saul try to deceive Holly upon finding out that William had left her 10 million dollars. Nora stops by Holly's house. Since the end of the last season and their surrogacy plans falling through, Kevin has been distant from Scotty and has kept himself busy with work. Scotty admits to having a one-night stand with another man and Kevin begins sleeping on the sofa downstairs. Once the entire family discover what has happened, Kevin becomes angry but also admits that he wasn't there for Scotty when he needed him, thus he is partly to blame for what has happened to their marriage. Kevin decides to stay with Kitty for a while. Paige gets Kevin and Scotty to finally discuss what has been going on with their relationship and after talking they mend their relationship. Sarah and Joe learn that Paige has diabetes. Tommy gets Justin a new job as a bellhop but he takes drugs and drinks on the job, so the two brothers come to blows. Kevin is forced to join his mother at a golf outing honoring their father instead of going on a date with Scotty, whom he later sees with another guy. Nora suspects that Saul has feelings for Holly. Kitty feels left out of the family because Nora had hung up a family picture that she's not in. Other main storylines throughout the series include the personal, political (usually through Robert and Kitty's and later Kevin's careers) and professional lives of Nora and all the brothers and sisters; their relationships with each other; interaction with Rebecca and her mother (William's mistress) Holly; and the running of the family business Ojai Foods—which is mostly looked after by Saul, Sarah and Tommy along with Holly and Rebecca from season 3 onwards. After the family sells Ojai Foods, Scotty and Saul open a restaurant and Nora begins working at a radio station which Sarah decides to buy. Tommy struggles after finding out that his father left Sarah as CEO of the Ojai Foods in his will. He and Sarah clash as he finds it hard reporting to her and Sarah fails to listen to his advice and respect his experience with the company. After Holly decides to use her shares and become involved in the business, she reveals that William planned to open a winery and that it was his plan to have Tommy run it.
