I'm still grimacing and aching inside now.. Can I sort it out before xmas he says.. he'll buy me a beer for doing it.. Whether you paint your textured wallpaper or not is purely down to personal choice. You’ll need to bear in mind that even the flattest emulsions will not conceal the texture and patterns, however. Once your second skim coat is completely dry and inspected, it's time for the final sanding. This step requires a gentle touch. Use a fine-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the wall to smooth out any remaining imperfections. Remember, the goal here isn't to remove material, but rather to create a perfectly smooth surface. Primer Sealer Application Bonus tip! As paint dries, it contracts. Even the glossiest, most flawless paint applications will develop a very fine “orange peel” texture. Look carefully at the front edge of the hood and the light reflection and note the slightly textured appearance. It’s not terrible, and you could choose to leave it at that. However, if you want to take your model to the next level, you can remove the orange peel. To do that, you’ll need a rubbing compound. See how to make rubbing compounds work for you here.

The only issue with this primer is that it’s solvent-based but as long as you take the usual necessary precautions (i.e. keeping the area ventilated) you won’t have any problems.

Once the final sanding is complete, it's time to apply a primer sealer. This step is crucial as it prepares the skimmed surface for the paint. It ensures that the paint adheres better to the surface and lasts longer. Use a roller or brush to apply a thin, even layer of primer sealer. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. Painting In conclusion, while it is possible to paint satin over gloss without sanding, it is still recommended to sand the surface first for the best results. Proper surface preparation is essential for achieving a smooth, even finish that will last for years to come. Can I put primer over gloss paint? As long as you’ve primed your textured wallpaper and have a smooth surface to paint over, any emulsion will do! Obviously, some emulsions are better than others and for a longer-lasting, scratch-resistant finish we’d always recommend spending a couple of quid extra on high-quality paint. On the whole I was more staisfied with the B&Q product as it produced a better finish and I could use a plastering float to apply it rather than the stupid Polycell tool (the Polycell product is far to runny to apply with a float) Interior walls in current newbuilds are typically made up of cheap plasterboard that is then painted to a matt emulsion.

So it ends there you think??? Nope... he's ripped out his bath and toilet.. tiled over existing tiles (white) and filled with blue grout (which now sits proudly all over his new albeit wonky tiles in a fine dried mess). His bath sealant is patchy over existing mouldy sealant. He's stopped tiling at the difficult bits (corners, windows, near pipes, pedestals etc and so has bare walls.) you think I'm ready to stop yet.. oh no..Resins present in knots causing light coloured paints to discolour or even flake. Resin bleed and flaking is a common problem where dark colours are used on south facing elevations. This is because dark colours absorb more heat than light colours. When the surface is thoroughly dry the affected surface will need to be rubbed down using 'wet and dry' abrasive paper. It can then be re-coated.

In this step, you're aiming to cover any imperfections that might have been missed during the first coat. Apply the second coat of skim using the same technique as before—pulling the trowel or drywall knife across the wall at a slight angle. Use a light touch and apply thin, even layers. Remember, it's easier to add more skim coat than it is to sand off excess material. Drying and Inspection Prime the skirting: Applying a primer will help to create a good base for the new paint, and also help it to adhere to the glossy surface. Choose a primer that is suitable for use on gloss surfaces, and apply it evenly over the skirting using a brush or roller. Allow the primer to dry completely before moving on to the next step. You will need to rub down using 'wet and dry' abrasive paper using water with a little detergent added. The surface should then be rinsed and allowed to dry before repainting. If this is impractical due to the size of area affected the area could be horizontally lined with lining paper and then repainted.

All you require is a smoothing knife and a tub of filler and you can get to work. I have included our choice of filler below.
