Description

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid begins with a top layer composed of aerated polyfoam intended to circulate air near the surface, with a solid memory foam layer beneath. The mixed-foam design produces a light bounce when you get into bed, followed by even contouring as your body settles into the memory foam. A transitional layer of dense polyfoam offers additional cushioning and serves as a buffer between you and the support core. At the risk of stating the obvious, we test our mattresses by sleeping on them. However, as we do so, there are a number of factors we aim to take into account. In addition to comfort and support, two important factors are firmness and temperature control (though we may also take factors such as edge support and motion isolation into account).

Beyond this standard build, mattresses can be grouped into categories according to the type of materials used to make them. The exact feel of a given mattress, including performance factors like breathability, motion isolation, and responsiveness, further depends on the quality and specific design of that model. An entry-level natural-fill or wool-filled mattress will generally be more of an investment than an entry-level synthetic mattress, but if nighttime overheating is affecting your sleep quality then it can be an investment in well-being well worth making.

While the main purpose of a support core is to reinforce the mattress, it also impacts other important aspects of the bed’s performance. To test for motion isolation, we use a tool called a vibrometer to measure the vibrations of a mattress (MMI) as a tester moves across the bed between various common sleeping positions. The graph below shows the vibrations produced by the Nectar, and how this compares to the average foam mattress. Each firmness option varies slightly in construction, but all WinkBed models have a Euro-top surface quilted with polyfoam. The foam surface helped relieve pressure point discomfort during testing by contouring to our bodies, cushioning joints and evenly dispersing weight. A transitional polyfoam layer acts as a buffer between the Euro-top and support system. The softest model has additional foam layers, while the firmest model features latex in lieu of polyfoam in the transitional layer. Primary Support Core: The primary support core is where most of the bed’s reinforcement comes from. Made of strong materials like steel coils, firm latex, or high-density polyfoam, the primary support core supplies a sturdy base to help promote healthy spinal alignment. Once again referring to our table, you can see that a side sleeper under 130 pounds will need a mattress that's a lot softer than those who are under 230 pounds. And the reasoning is very simple – the heavier you are, the more pressure is exerted onto your mattress.Soft mattresses are best for those who sleep on their side. This is because a soft mattress is the best mattress for cushioning and side sleepers have the most vulnerable pressure points, for example, their hips. The Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress is a true all-rounder; comfortable, supportive, and cool to sleep on, our reviewers couldn’t fault it. However, it is an investment, so what makes it worth the extra spend? At Bensons for Beds, all our mattresses are classified as either soft, medium, firm or extra firm. How often should you change your mattress?
