I enjoyed the character development as the story pushed towards its thrilling and superbly twisted climax. Then once I received the galley I was instructed to go ahead and read it but not to talk about it anywhere until Halloween. And yes the questions just keep rolling in and the author make us wait for the answers by weaving a storyline so tight around those affected. A slow burning story that speeds up halfway through, its pace mirrors Alison's psyche as it unravels, holding the reader in suspense before packing a final punch.

As she’s describing the house, I formed a picture of a large eerie and sinister looking house that has been neglected and rundown. The story of it is based on an old folktale about two little girls who are promised a reward if they behave badly, but with any story like this there are consequences. I would like to thank NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author Sophie Draper for my ARC in exchange for an honest review. It's already a long, long time since I've read an Adele Parks' book, so I was over the moon when my review copy arrived - it has such a gorgeous cover, and I also loved the sound of the blurb, so intriguing and so promising. Steph and Craig are also rather one-dimensional and never emerge from the page, therefore making it difficult to invest in the novel as a whole.

I had no idea of where this book would take me but having read Adele Parks previously I knew it would certainly be well written. Her refusal to even discuss or consider the fact that a pear drum played such a negative role in her growing up and then it suddenly surfaces in a series of tales that seem to strangely reflect her own experiences is worthy of a face palm. Then one fine day, a guy named Tom appeared on their doorsteps claiming that there has been a mixed-up fifteen years ago at the hospital.Caro hadn’t really kept in touch with her stepmother and her relationship with her sister had also grown apart so when their stepmother passes the girls are left the inheritance and the decision of what to do. So when I bought her latest offering, I expected her usual brand of sharp, but light hearted women's fiction. He's an eccentric millionaire who lives alone in a large house and an invitation he extends to an old friend will culminate in unimaginable violence. It felt like the author tried to introduce a backstory to explain why Alison was like that but it all felt very unconvincing and I didn’t feel any compassion or empathy with her at all.

Then a stranger turns up on your doorstep and tells you the daughter you brought home from the hospital fifteen years ago is not yours. So many people were talking about this marketing ploy that I had to see for myself if this book would be worth the hype. A haunting and twisty story about the lies we tell those closest to us, perfect for fans of Ruth Ware and Cass Green.
