The light is cool neon, the sets are like the leftovers from Blade Runner and the story is just plain daft. Audiences can sense David’s remorse and we see him do the work to start his and Winnie Hicks’s (Kimberly Scott) path of healing. Shadow details are plentiful, never lost or eaten up by the blacks, and the image never looks murky or milky.

Full Moon brings together a six pack of B-movies produced by legendary schlockmeisters Eurocine in one handy boxed set collection. As the movie comes closer to its climax, however, it begins to feel more and more like all of this was created simply to offer up a gimmicky twist ending, one that is not only easy to see coming but which definitely caters to the lowest common denominator. label Mill Creek Entertainment has announced that it will release a special SteelBook edition of Joel Schumacher's thriller Flatliners (1990), starring Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt. Nevertheless, the star power headlining this prototypical early-'90s genre feature, made for a then-aging MTV generation still addicted to fast-cut pacing and fancy camera tricks, is a big part of its success at the time and remains memorable after three decades.

Had one of their friends failed to resuscitate and the others were forced to continue the trips to bring him back, that would have been a stronger dynamic. that this tendency toward the very warm end of the spectrum is only increased courtesy of HDR and/or Dolby Vision. Flatliners is one of those early 90s films with one foot still in the 80s, directed beautifully by the master of neon camp Joel Schumacher and starring the epitome of late80s/early 90s mega film stars triptic of Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts (along with Oliver Platt and William Baldwin). As their encounters continue and intensify, particularly for Nelson, it becomes clear that the only way to stop this is by somehow making amends. Courtesy of Arrow Video, this 4K Ultra HD release arrives with a highly-attractive Dolby Vision video, a pair of strong DTS-HD MA options and a healthy, exclusive selection of bonuses.

Assistant director John Kretchmer (14-minutes) explains what an assistant director does (the ship’s first mate to the ship’s captain) before getting into some of the technical challenges around the film’s photography. Similar to the other supernatural-based films of the era, it had an aggressive visual style—one might say even more so with bolder saturation choices and extravagant set design, thanks to director of photography Jan de Bont and production designer Eugenio Zanetti. Part of the reason for that could be related to the film being a “forgotbuster,” a term coined by Nathan Rabin for The Dissolve and mentioned here in the included audio commentary featuring critics Bryan Reesman and Max Evry, the term meaning that despite the film being a success it has largely been forgotten and is rarely, if ever, brought up in film circles. Restoration (2022, 11 minutes) catches up with production designer Eugenio Zanetti and art director Larry Lundy as they share their inspirations from Greek myths.
