Shadow details are plentiful, never lost or eaten up by the blacks, and the image never looks murky or milky.

Nevertheless, the star power headlining this prototypical early-'90s genre feature, made for a then-aging MTV generation still addicted to fast-cut pacing and fancy camera tricks, is a big part of its success at the time and remains memorable after three decades.

Assistant director John Kretchmer (14-minutes) explains what an assistant director does (the ship’s first mate to the ship’s captain) before getting into some of the technical challenges around the film’s photography. Similar to the other supernatural-based films of the era, it had an aggressive visual style—one might say even more so with bolder saturation choices and extravagant set design, thanks to director of photography Jan de Bont and production designer Eugenio Zanetti.
