The 'girls are better than boys' and 'down with the patriarchy' -flavored spiel that underpinned on average at least two of our three weekly assemblies really didn't sit right with me - the men in my life were lovely and there was never any suggestion that I would be any less successful than my male counterparts so what was all the fuss about?

It's about intersectionality, it covers the history of the waves of feminism (also pointing out the less beautiful aspects of the history of feminism, such as racism), it talks about periods, and about answering the most asked (and often dumb) questions about feminism by boys/men (in a very funny way I might add). This book is great at highlighting the everyday issues and situations that arise in the life of a female while also touching on the more heavy and uncomfortable feminist conversations. It lacked structure and direction, and was padded out with listicles, short fiction, poems, a playlist for apparently no other reason than to make it thicker. However, while recycling is great, there also need to be bigger, systematic changes if we are to save the planet, such as stopping companies from polluting the oceans and discrediting the "climate denial" movement. After reading this I am filled with an urgent desire to actually go out and do something about these wrongs!Period should absolutely be destigmatised because they're a perfectly normal, biological function that impacts 50% of the population - regardless of whether you feel empowered by it or not.

Feminism has been known to make the odd person or two nervous, and certainly generates a sizeable amount of controversy. Compiled of essays by women from a huge variety of backgrounds, from Hollywood actresses to teenage activists, writing about what being a woman means to them.
