I think this is a really valuable book, since reading it I’ve recommended it to a number of friends who work with teenagers.

It is very rare that an author succeeds in writing a book for teenagers which is also a 'must read for their parents and teachers. Morgan has a gift for simplifying and explaining complicated subject matter with a light but precise touch, and she is careful to distinguish between established facts and theories and speculations of her own and other people's. She brings the biology of the brain to the general reader in a way that will not only educate but entertain. But when I came to re-read the 2013 edition for this revision, I was quite uncomfortable with some of my phrases, particularly when I made jokey remarks on what, for me, is not a funny subject. PERIOD founder and Harvard College student Nadya Okamoto offers a manifesto on menstruation and why we can no longer silence those who bleed-and how to engage in youth activism. She has written nearly 100 books, including novels such as Fleshmarket (currently being adapted for the London stage) and Mondays are Red, but in the last twelve years she has become increasingly well known for her passionate factual work on adolescence, with Blame My Brain - The Amazing Teenage Brain Revealed and The Teenage Guide to Stress being seminal titles for teenagers and the adults who work with and care about them. The book itself is written for teenagers, and although I bought it originally for my almost 12 yr old, I'd probably not want him reading about things like alcohol, drugs and self-harm quite yet.

I really liked this structure, I’m sure different readers will particularly like different sections but by presenting the information in a range of ways there will definitely be something for everybody. While the generalisations are fascinating, and the basic biology explained well, it is not written by a scientist and a lot of the assessments are very simplistic.Aimed directly at teenagers, it is pitched just right - with the correct balance between facts, theory, and guidance. Teenagers and their parents will find much to fascinate them in this updated edition of Nicola Morgan’s skilful, non-scientists explanation of the complex and specific science that makes teenagehood such a specific period of growing up. If you have teenage children this book really tries to explain why they are SO DIFFICULT TO LIVE WITH SOMETIMES!

All the reviews in this archive were written by members of the Scattered Authors Society , sharing thoughts and enthusiasms about books and reading and based on their long experience of working with children and visiting schools and libraries . My new 'how to cope' guide will not be in use for a few years yet but I will hold it close when the time comes. My main issue with this was the references in the book to ‘successfully committing suicide’ saying ‘commit’ is outdated as suicide is not a crime now and we are encouraged to move away from talking about a suicide attempt as successful or failed and rather to say completed instead, I would have given more stars but for this. What I love about this is that it shows clearly the difference you will see with children who live in the learning part of their brain i. Nicola Morgan's entertaining book is written for the teenagers themselves, to explain the phase they are going through, so they can develop tools to cope with the intensity of the teenage years.Full details of your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations are available in the UK from your local Citizens' Advice Bureau or your Local Authority's Trading Standards Office.
