Granny Takes a Trip was London’s first psychedelic boutique, opening before psychedelia even became a thing. It was opened in 1966 on the Kings Road by Nigel Waymouth and Sheila Cohen, ostensibly as an outlet for Cohen’s extensive vintage clothes collection, and before long the shop was at the centre of Swinging London, as the Mod scene gave way to the multi-coloured spectacle of the hippy era, and the constantly-changing facade of the shop kept it on the cutting edge of what was cool. Somehow, this symbol of the hippy era kept going well into the 1970s – the original shop was closed and sold in 1974, but the name lingered on until 1979! The BBC can announce the commission of Gangsta Granny Strikes Again! an adaptation of the hugely popular 2021 children’s book written by David Walliams. Gangsta Granny Strikes Again! is the latest David Walliams book to be commissioned by the BBC following Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny, The Boy In The Dress, Billionaire Boy, Grandpa’s Great Escape and The Midnight Gang.

The outgoing octogenarian, who lives in Oroville California, even has a tattoo around her nipple that reads ‘Gang Bang Queen’ and launched a career in blue movies seven years ago. This comedy drama, the sequel to the 2013 BBC One movie Gangsta Granny, features a stellar cast which includes David himself as Dad, Mike, Sheridan Smith (Four Lives, Cleaning Up) as Mum, Linda, Kevin Bishop (Inside No. 9, Porridge) as Italian dancer Flavio, Maggie Steed (Fisherman’s Friends, Paddington 2) as Queen, Griff Rhys Jones (Future TX, Griff’s Canadian Adventure) as Mr Parker and young Archie Yates (Jojo Rabbit, Home Sweet Home Alone) as grandson Ben. It's grannies to the rescue in this humorous picture-book from author/artist Judith Kerr, creator of the beloved Mog the Forgetful Cat and its many sequels. Describing the various formidable grannies who make up the "gang," from Maureen the car mechanic to Beth the cattle-herder, the story next details how they foiled a group of 'hoodies' intent on robbing a bakery. The punks might have sneered at first, but they soon realized that the Great Granny Gang was to be taken seriously...

David Walliams says: “It is a thrill to revisit these characters in a brand new story. I hope families are going to love this comedy adventure story. A huge thank you to the BBC for making it happen.” Patricia Hidalgo, Director BBC Children’s and Education, says: “I can’t imagine a more perfect film for families to sit down and watch together. This adventurous tale will appeal to all generations young and old.” I really don’t think you can go wrong with Judith Kerr, her stories are always entertaining, her rhymes make for lovely read aloud books and her illustrations are always warm and welcoming. The Great Granny Gang is no exception to any of these and it results in a gentle, entertaining read. I love that this book is about grannies who aren’t living boring lives – this bunch of octo- and nonagenarians are super cool and adventurous. I’d be really hard-pressed to choose a favourite granny, though Maud repairing roads with her pneumatic drill might take some beating! An 80-year-old woman known as the ‘ Gang Bang Queen’ has revealed she has slept with more than 1,000 men and starred in a number of porn films. The ending is super and will put smiles on the faces of people everywhere! This book is a great little keeper that has a bit of a fun rhyming quality to it, which is always a huge plus in my book!

Updated: 29 September 2022 It is a thrill to revisit these characters in a brand new story. I hope families are going to love this comedy adventure story." — David Walliams I love the softness of Judith Kerr’s illustrations. The illustrations in this book are drawn and coloured using pencils, they’re truly lovely have a timeless feel, so in keeping with the age of the main characters. There are lots of action filled pictures in the book, these really do give the impression of movement for the characters. I liked spotting all of the little details in the pictures, there were so many things that made me smile.Change the plan you will roll onto at any time during your trial by visiting the “Settings & Account” section.
