If you're using scales, stop pouring water just before the scale reads 220g (assuming your cup, dripper and coffee are directly on the scales!) But looks deceive… because the Hario V60 makes rather awesome coffee! And with such EASE. Seriously, it’s unreal.

Multiple companies adapted Melitta’s dandy dripper design, Hario being one of them. This Japanese brand first started producing glassware in the 1920s. Fast-forward a couple of decades, and we find them making household items, too. The first thing to remember when brewing specialty coffee with V60 is that you must wet the V60 paper filters to ensure that none of the paper taste gets transferred to the coffee. This also pre-warms the dripper and serving vessel or cup. A veritable third-wave coffee pioneer, the US-based Intelligentsia Coffee consistently makes local and international best-of lists and is home to award-winning baristas.Use either less or more water for the second pour to compensate for the difference (if any) in the first one. Pour the rest of the brew with the same spiral motion, taking special care to avoid pouring on the filter paper itself.

While Rao and Hoffman have similar procedures, Kasuya uses a much coarser grind (similar to French press), forgoes the bloom phase, and splits the pours into 5 batches. A Coffee Grinder - manual or electric; we suggest starting out with a hand grinder first. You can of course use pre-ground coffee but this can spoil in a matter of hours.Whizz on to 2005, and guess what you’ll find? The release of the V60 coffee dripper! Angular drippers had been popular in Japan since the 1980s, yet in the 00s designers started experimenting with rounded shapes to achieve a cleaner, more tea-like taste. The first is the ‘bloom’. This is when you pour over that first 50ml of water to soak the grounds. The bloom takes around 30 seconds. A brew ratio (or golden ratio) of 1:16 tells us that we need 16 grams of water for every gram of coffee. We use 320 millilitres of water for one-to-two cups of V60 coffee. So, because 320 divided by 16 is 20, we’ll need 20g of coffee. This is about 3 heaped tablespoons. After a moment, continue to slowly pour the water over the grounds in the dripper. Try to pour in to the middle and then draw an outward sprial with the water to get all the coffee extracting. Avoid pouring too much straight on to the filter paper directly. Don’t fancy donning the marigolds? Just put your plastic or ceramic V60 in the dishwasher to give it a good deep clean.

Pour your ground coffee in to the filter + dripper, then pour a little water over to start the process According to him, the first 40% adjusts the balance between sweetness and acidity, while the next 60% controls the strength of the coffee. Remember those V60 brew ratios we mentioned? Experiment with a few different coffee amounts to see which takes your fancy. You can find a few different types of pour over brewers, with the Chemex and V60 being the most popular. After this, you pour over the remaining water (in a circular motion, remember!) over 2/2.5 minutes.Of course, there are other brewing methods great for the beginning and easier to follow, such as the AeroPress. The dripper, however, gives you more opportunities and helps you discover the light, sweet and clear nature of homogenous coffees. Shapes, sizes, materials… Metal filters, also known as mesh filters, are an alternative to paper filters. They’re made of stainless steel and are reusable, making them a more eco-friendly option. Metal filters allow more oils and fine particles to pass through, resulting in a richer, more full-bodied cup of coffee. However, they can also produce a slightly grittier cup with a distinct metallic taste. The V60 coffee dripper is a user-friendly coffee device from Hario. It’s masterfully designed to achieve optimum extraction and easy use (it looks pretty cool, too).

Scott Rao “ strongly recommends” the plastic V60, which maintains the heat of the brew and allows you to manipulate the funnel during the brew without burning yourself. Since, for the sake of the text, we have already made this complicated story a bit simpler, let’s now consider our social practices and say more about the dripper or, in other words, the V60. Which, in my opinion, is one of the simplest and best ways of making good coffee. The Hario V60 has become one of the most widely used brewing methods in specialty coffee shops around the world due its consistency and the ability of the brewer to have complete control over the strength and body of the coffee.
