I don't often read middle grade but the blurb selling this as a book similar to that of a Goosebumps book had me sold, and I wasn't disappointed. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The creep factor gradually builds into the nightmare these teens must work together to defeat and save one another's lives, and the life of their teacher. This is Killick’s best book yet; think ‘The Breakfast Club’ meets ‘Stranger Things’, making great use of her talent for comic dialogue and her astute eye for just the right kind of scary for this age group. Despite not knowing each other, the four kids - Angelo, Gustav, Naira and Hallie - work together and as well as scary moments they are so many side-splitting moments which had me giggling for ages afterwards.

One of the best thriller horror kids books I’ve read - I loved the characters in this, particularly the main character. I didn’t have a preference when I started reading this book, but now I definitely love them as a whole and through their moniker “Club Loser”. I ended the book really loving all four of them, and I can’t wait to read more of the series to see more of their character arcs. With scuttling horrors, subterranean scares and creepy caretakers, this is a great claustrophobic horror and we get to enjoy the bonding between the children as they’re compelled to join forces, despite their differences. This book is set in Dread Wood High School and its grounds on a Saturday detention session for four students who got a bit out of control during a lunch break.

They know each other in that awkward way of school friends, where you’ve spent a lot of time in close proximity but don’t really know each other. There’s also a light touch as it handles child poverty, bullying and disability, and I really liked the way that our main characters acknowledged and tried to make amends for their mistakes.

com to record that I am either a Student, Parent, Nursery Teacher, Primary Teacher, Secondary Teacher, Literacy Coordinator, Librarian, Bookseller, Publisher or Other so that I can receive worldbookday. It has all the elements of a great horror story: a group of imperfect, misunderstood heroes; evil, cackling villains; jump scares aplenty; and bloodthirsty, terrifying creatures to rival any of the residents of Jurassic Park. L. Stine, this book creeped me out just as much as Stine's legendary Chicken Chicken and reminded me of Christopher Pike's Spooksville. Content: Whilst there's not any actual swear words in the book, there are lots of instance of the characters saying butt, ass or shiz in place of swearing so make your own decisions about who you feel appropriate to share this book with.I think this would creep out anyone, especially kids, but I don’t think it would scare them unless they are sensitive to one of the TWs mentioned above. I want to start by saying I LOVED THIS BOOK, but I won’t be giving it any stars on GR, or recommending it for MG readers. The story is narrated entirely from the perspective of Angelo,a loner who is harbouring a lot of anger when we are first introduced to his character and is determined just to get through the detention without having any involvement with the other three students. Overall, this is a fast-paced book that I loved so much and can't wait for the next book in this series. They are chucked into this wild race-against-time plot where everything goes wrong and the impossible happens, and that brings them closer. I’m so glad I got to read this book because I had a great time and it let me discover this great author, who I’ll definitely be reading more of.

I’d just come off the back of reading a genuinely scary sci-fi horror book -which you may hear more about soon-, and that was off the back of reading a not so scary but very atmospheric folk-y horror-y book.

They are all struggling with different burdens, and it was lovely to see how they all supported each other, despite what they were going through together.
