Creating a life of flourishing requires careful consideration of values and their implementation in clients’ lives. Using strength cards during strengths-based coaching interventions is a simple, effective means of getting a client to challenge their self-concept perceptions and understand how their thinking patterns may affect their ability to perform, specifically in career-coaching scenarios. The following worksheets focus on the values surrounding positive relationships. Understanding the Values You Want in a Relationship

What can values cards be used for?

The list below brings together about 50 of the most common values for people (adapted from Russ Harris, 2010). Print out the list and place a mark next to each one, either a V for ‘very important to me’, Q for ‘quite important to me’ or N for ‘not so important to me’. Remember, there’s no right or wrong answer – this is just for you. As best as you can, go with your gut and try not to over think it. Burke, J. (2018). Conceptual framework for a positive psychology coaching practice. Coaching Psychologist, 14(1), 16–25. I have found the VALUE cards to be an invaluable part of my facilitation tool-kit. They were perfect when recently the subject of personal values was raised on a leadership development programme. The cards worked really well to get the discussion going and to help individuals pinpoint their value-set. Being so compact I keep them in my bag all the time now, and its great knowing how versatile they will be for both group work and one to one coaching sessions.”

You can change the name of the Life Value to best fit your own life – choose your own words. E.g. “Conservation”, “Keeping the woods clean” or “Gardening”. When setting goals and building plans for meaningful living, obstacles can impede committing to the next step. Barriers may include: We have already seen the importance and value of identifying, exploring, and applying our values throughout our life domains (LeJeune & Luoma, 2019). Most of us know the importance of good relationships at work, in education, and our personal lives. The following two worksheets are focused on getting a deeper understanding of the client’s values.
