It takes the same slim EN-EL5 battery as its predecessor with a power rating of 1100mAh. That delivers enough power to take 200 shots with the COOLPIX P520, down from 240 on the COOLPIX P510 and by any standard a pretty meagre allotment, certainly compared with the PowerShot SX50 HS’s 315 shots or the Panasonic Lumix FZ70 / FZ72’s more generous 400 shot capacity. The body design has barely changed since the P500, remaining amazingly compact considering the lens. And the lens is really the bulk of the weight, which makes the rest of the body feel lightweight and cheaply constructed. However, the right-hand grip is deep and comfortable with a textured rubber piece on front and the large lens barrel gives you ample space to hold and steady the camera with your left hand. The controls are comfortably placed and responsive.

The P520 is Nikon’s top-of-the-range ultra-zoom (or bridge) camera, with a 42x zoom, articulated 3in, 921,000-dot screen, electronic viewfinder (EVF) and GPS. It’s quite a bit cheaper than its rivals, though. Lens Performance - Images have a good amount of detail at both ends of the lens, but are a little soft. Purple fringing and chromatic aberration does become a bit of a problem at the longest end. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 1cm which allows for impressive macro shots. On first impression, the Nikon P520 is noticeably lighter than some rivals. That’s a good thing, of course, but this weight and a polarising glossy finish make it feel a tad cheap. It features a 1/2.3-inch 18.1MP CMOS sensor. The camera also includes a 42x optical zoom lens, which delivers a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-1000mm, and offers a variable aperture from f/3-5.9. Nikon’s also equipped this lens with Lens-shift Vibration Reduction (VR), to smooth out any shake when zooming. Plus, the camera provides a 2x digital zoom, doubling the zoom range to a whopping 2000mm. cm (3.2-in.), approx. 921k-dot, wide viewing angle TFT LCD with anti-reflection coating and 5-level brightness adjustment, Vari-angle TFT LCD Physically, it’s quite a beefy camera, almost matching the size of an entry-level DSLR in many respects. Coming in at 549g, it has some heft to it. However, the size does allow the camera to feature quite a deep and pronounced grip for a comfortable grasp during use. Another thing you’ll notice from that comparison is that, as well as outdoing the COOLPIX P520 at the telephoto end of the range, the Lumix FZ70 / FZ72 also has a wider wide angle at 20mm equivalent compared with 24mm on the COOLPIX P520. To be fair to the COOLPIX P520 though, the 60x range on the Lumix FZ70 / FZ72 is unparalleled and, while it does give you that little extra, which is particularly effective at the wide angle end of the range, the COOLPIX P520 is more than enough zoom for virtually any situation you’re likely to encounter. Just to note that the Canon PowerShot SX50’s 50x zoom has the same 24mm equivalent wide angle as the COOLPIX P520 but, like the FZ70 / FZ72, has a 1200mm equivalent maximum telephoto focal length.

For video, it shoots 1080p full HD video up to 30 fps. And it also supplies the lower quality interlaced format at 60 fps, for moments, slow-motion capture are necessities. Overall, video quality, while not the sharpest, is good for this price point and this class of camera. Low Light Performance Outputs are under a cover on the body's right side; you get a Mini-HDMI and a Micro-USB/AV port, the latter of which can be used with Nikon's WU-1a Wi-Fi adapter so it can communicate with Android and iOS devices for viewing and transferring photos and videos. There's no accessory shoe for an add-on flash, limiting you to the onboard pop-up one. It doesn't automatically rise when needed, instead remaining off until you push a button on the left side of the camera. It's adequately powerful and there are flash exposure compensation settings available.
The Nikon Coolpix P520 has four different Picture Controls, which can be individually tweaked (sharpening, contrast and saturation) to suit your taste. Chrism8, Thanks for that, but the battery is brand new and the correct one, as is the charger which plugs into the laptop. I am leaving the battery in the Coolpix overnight to see if it becomes fully discharged again. At full resolution, there are two JPEG quality settings availableon the Nikon Coolpix P520 - Fine and Normal.

The P520 can shoot Full HD (1920×1080 pixel) movies at 60i/50i/30p/25p frames per second, with stereo sound and full use of the optical zoom. It also offers a 720p/25p mode, an iFrame 960x540 pixel mode at 30/25p and VGA 640x480 pixel mode at 30/25p. Nikon's smart designers put the stereo microphone on the top of the camera right behind the flash. A Wind Noise Reduction function is available in the Movie menu. Serving to minimise the noise of wind blowing on the microphone, it is recommended to be turned on in strong wind only, as it may also make other sounds difficult to hear. Sensor-shift VR is not available during movie recording, but you may opt to turn on electronic image stabilisation. Access the Firmware version item in the camera's setup menu to confirm that the firmware has been upgraded. The COOLPIX P520’s menu system is divided over four tabs, Shooting, Movie, GPS and Set up. The Shooting menu is a long list of 18 items, so changing something like the AF mode, or Active D-lighting, which are in the middle somewhere, can be a bit tedious. The COOLPIX P520 does have a single programmable function button, though, which can be assigned to one of nine functions including image quality, size, white balance, metering, continuous shooting, ISO sensitivity, AD area mode and Vibration reduction.
banehawi, Thanks for that. From searching the web the last 2 days, it is not just the P520 which has the problem; other Nikon P series cameras seem to suffer from it too. At 2.8 inches and with 460k dots, it’s slightly smaller and less detailed than the COOLPIX P520’s and, although the additional resolution isn’t all that noticeable, the 0.4 of an inch makes a much bigger difference than you might imagine. The COOLPIX P520’s screen provides a nice big, bright, detailed image that I found was much better both for composing and reviewing shots than either the PowerShot SX50 HS or the Lumix FZ70 / FZ72.

Ordinarily, this kind of additional stabilisation is reserved for movie shooting and it’s a little odd to provide two levels of stabilisation for stills shooting, if there’s a more effective option, why not just include that and forget about the less effective one? It’s possible, I suppose, that Active mode consumes significantly more power, and with the COOLPIX P520’s less than stellar battery life, that would be a consideration. But the answer to that is surely to turn on Active mode when you need stabilisation and turn it off altogether when you don’t? Audio isn’t recorded with the HS video modes but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can use the effects filters. The only limitation on this is that the Soft and Nostalgic sepia effects are only available with the HS720/2x mode. I should also mention that you can’t use the use zoom or Full-time AF with the HS modes. Regardless of that, this is an impressive range of high speed recording modes and one of the COOLPIX P530’s big advantages over the H400 and SX520 HS neither of which offers anything like it. using the instructions below. If this latest version is already installed in your camera, you need not update the firmware. In Normal mode the COOLPIX P520 can shoot hand-held at an impressive five stops slower that the photographer’s rule of thumb says is advisable. Interestingly I didn’t gain any further advantage by switching to Active mode. That said, I was standing on firm level ground and was able to hold the camera steady, pressed to my face while using the viewfinder. In less favourable circumstances, i.e. when shooting from a car or under poor foothold conditions, the Active mode may well yield an advantage.
