It gave us the character of Pandarus, from whose name we derived the word “pander”—to gratify and exploit another person’s weaknesses. As a radicalized college student in the late 60's, a creative writing instructor pointed this book out to me.

They are at odds with the clever and intelligent competence of our main character, yet she keeps dragging her self down in those themes. all it did was remind me of what a wonderful Rochester Stephens played -- and a reminder like that is never a bad thing.

IN 1943, PHILIP WYLIE, then best known for his cosmic disaster novel When Worlds Collide (1933) and its sequel, After Worlds Collide (1934), dropped a literary bombshell into the laps of readers with Generation of Vipers (1943), a blistering critique of American society whose impact has yet to be equaled. Years earlier, Thornton had written a paper that gained her a certain measure of notoriety on why women don't need men. Picking it up again after four decades, I remembered little about it except (of course) mom and a general atmosphere of splenetic outrage. And that, my friends, is just one of the many reasons I love Lewis -- he may be taking WAY TOO FRIGGIN' LONG to ask Hobson ( Clare Holman) out on a proper date, but he has LOADS of compassion. If a man kisses her with any earnestness, it is time for mom to feel for her pocketbook, and this occasionally does happen.

There are references to Nell’s past history – we know that detective James is her ex and that current boyfriend Rav has been in an accident, leaving him with life-changing injuries. Also, the bit about giving us glimpses into the mind of the perpetrator, cleverly using only pronouns, so we have to keep guessing, becomes tedious. The book is filled with blow by blow descriptions of the sort of workplace meeting I would take a pay cut to avoid, and the dialogue is pedestrian and cliché-ridden.She may have swapped badgers for bears when she emigrated from a quaint village in the South Downs to the wild mountains of the Pacific Northwest, but her books remain firmly rooted in the rolling downland she grew up in. Those words were written by Wylie in December 1954 in his introduction to the book's 20th printing, by which time it had sold more than 180,000 copies and stirred a furious national debate. The suspects that Lewis and Hathaway uncover during the course of their investigation weave into a tangled web of red herrings and venomous grudges worthy of one of Shakespeare's plays. Still so swept up in a hurt that he can’t forget, he attempts to build houses on Port Meadow, their favourite place when they were together, tries to bury the shreds of his heart in concrete and new facades, hoping it might relieve him of the pain. I loved how this story showcased Lewis's compassion, particularly in how he could relate to Miranda's desire for a "simpler," tech-free life.
