Damnable Tales - A Folk Horror Anthology - Unbound

There's a bit of everything in here from great demonic figures, to ominous brooding buildings, to strange and twisted village rituals. He is one of the ‘talking heads’ on the Severin films' documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror’.These twenty-two stories take the reader beyond the safety and familiarity of the town into the isolated and untamed wilderness. Conversely, there were also one or two that seemed to end very abruptly and could have gone on for a bit longer. A s soon as I heard the initial musings of a book of classic folk horror short stories selected and illustrated by Richard Wells, my curiosity was piqued on several levels.

And what wonders could be dug from the soil of Africa, Australasia, and Scandinavia and rendered with the imagery of Richard Wells? Hi Nicholas - we're a little different from other crowdfunding sites - we do take the money up front and hold it (safely) until the project is funded. He is also the creator of the Folk Horror Revival and Urban Wyrd Projects and the associated publishing arm Wyrd Harvest Press. They have been selected by Richard Wells, an illustrator and graphic designer known for his dark folkloric style and whose work for television has featured in Sherlock, Doctor Who and the the recent BBC adaptation of Dracula. It's actually got me fantasizing about starting a publishing company so I can get Lawrence's works back into print! But even if some are repetetive, it's usually easy to see why they were included, and this is a perfect gift for anyone who enjoys horror or dark fantasy.

Damnable Tales: A Folk Horror Anthology a book by Richard Wells.

I also enjoyed ‘Pallinghurst Barrow’, just because of its bizarre encounter in the tomb, and because the author had thought to provide us with a more mundane explanation for the events. Places where the crepuscular light is eternally fading and in which the inanimate or the dormant is slowly stirring. Tales Accursed is the second collection of classic supernatural stories selected by the artist Richard Wells. Primarily working in the television industry, he has provided graphic props for the likes of Poldark, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and the 2020 BBC adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Though there are intricate illustrations I found the first couple of stories had so much archaic old English that they were difficult to follow, others needed the dictionary by my side, there were so many words that needed looking up, thereby breaking up the story IMO.

This may not be too unexpected; folk horror is a prevalent feature within British and Irish weird fiction as it fits so well with the landscape, lore, and history of these isles. The book includes a foreword by the author Benjamin Myers, amongst whose gritty novels The Gallows Pole has made an impression on many folk horror revivalist readers (and which has been adapted to screen by Shane Meadows and the BBC), and that’s another box ticked in its favour.

Most are very English in style and setting (and for this reason, the very American Jackson feels a bit of an outlier, though her inclusion is an obvious ‘big name’ draw). This time, it’s ‘Man-Size in Marble’ by Edith Nesbit, first published in the December issue of Home Chimes magazine, 1887. At the weekend I finished putting together some ideas for the final cover design for the book, so hopefully I’ll have some news on that fairly soon. Sheridan Le Fanu's dark fairy tale, 'Laura Silver-Bell' is also hard going on a first read (even the narrator apologises for the Northumbrian dialect) but stick with it. I’ve not had a copy and worried it’s gone to my old address, I did try to update it when I moved house but don’t know if there’s a way to check where it’s been sent?
