The L Cush pads open things up a bit, both in treble and soundstage but they’re not as comfortable. They’re really just imperfect circumaural pads in disguise. I don’t know anybody who keeps their ears on those pads. Everybody hides their earlobe inside, which means that part of your ear is pressed up against the plastic grill. That gets painful. More importantly, it’s not open enough to get the top end or widen the soundstage to its full potential. I’ve owned 3 pairs of Grado headphones and while they may not offer the resolution or detail of the best planar headphones, they are decidedly fun to listen to. Like the Grado SR60X, this is another example of a headset that passively amplifies noise from the surroundings. You can see this on the isolation chart where the pink line drops below the x-axis into negative attenuation (otherwise known as gain). We believe this is the result of the acoustic design of the headphones, which creates a pronounced resonance at 2kHz—the fact that ambient noise at this frequency is also boosted suggests this is achieved with an acoustic resonator. Hi Dennis. Thanks for the kind words. Grado modifications are a slippery slope… there’s always just one more tweak you want to do! 😉 Over-ear headphones are rarely the first place to look for head-shaking, sub-heavy bass, but you can still get plenty of punch and impact. The SR80x do not feel sub-filled or bass abundant, but still defined and percussive in their lows. Their low end’s best quality to me was its tightness and purity. Listening to Sabrina Claudio’s “Natural,” the heavy R&B drums and bass hit right where I wanted them to. Enough punch to cut through the mix without dominating it. While the basement frequencies were not highly intense, I didn’t feel their bass response was incomplete, just very controlled. It ships pairs costing thousands in thin cardboard boxes and must be the only major player that actively tries to sell itself like a small family-run cobblers. For full extension, you need the G Cush salad bowls, but they distance the ear from the driver to such a degree that bass is lost, probably because of the porous side rims. What you end up with is too shrill for everything below a GS-1000. That’s where venting the drivers helps balance things out. With fully vented drivers, you can pop a pair of salad bowls on and get a very nice combo of airy treble-happy Grados with great thump. The SR80x have a comfortable, warm high end. They’re unmistakably on the brighter side, but avoid any harshness in this area with how silky and smooth they are. Their detail and accuracy in the highs is the first piece of their impressively articulate, crisp sound. They’re not overly-snappy in the high end, further contributing to their more liquid treble. If you want a very clean, modern high-end with some vintage warmth, the SR80x hits the nail on the head. Please take all this as a second-hand impression as I have not had the opportunity to try all these cup types (and certainly not in a controlled test environment). I personally feel the differences are quite subtle between what I have tried.Grado speakers can reveal new notes and details in songs heard hundreds of times. The driver and housing working in tandem react to sound vibrations and virtually eliminate transient distortions. The full bodied vocals and excellent dynamics compliment the musical characteristics that are brought to light through the extreme clarity and wide range of the SR80x. Generation Grado drivers are here. Specifically tuned for the SR80x, this new speaker design features a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with decreased effective mass, and a reconfigured diaphragm. Reengineering these components for our 44mm drivers improve efficiency, reduces distortion, and preserves the harmonic integrity of your music. New Cables & Headband Our love for wood started in 1994 with our first mahogany headphone. The unique soundscape of wood, when paired with our new X Drivers, brings the signature Grado sound to new heights.

Grado hasn’t torn up its own rulebook and revolutionised its legendary headphones, because it hasn’t needed to. But the tweaks made to the SR80x have certainly added value in the right direction. At this money, the SR80 model remains the finest in the market, and such is their dominance in this niche that we wouldn’t be surprised if this were true for as long as wired headphones have their place in this world. I knew the house would still be asleep so I found my favorite spot on the office sofa and curled up with a copy of American Tabloid and the Grado SR80x headphones connected to my iPhone 6S — I need both a 3.5mm and Apple Lightning connector for headphones and Dongle DACs.From whiskey barrels to fallen trees in Brooklyn, these limited editions and collaborations let us try something new. There’s no need to change what works, so these limited editions give us a chance to experiment with collaborators without altering our existing lineup. Designing with white oak? A motorcycle? Sounds fun.
