Description

I also love the use of many various names in the example sentences repeated throughout the book--helps to remember kanji names. The Dictionary of Japanese Grammar series is simply the best grammar series I've ever come across in any language. The authors do an excellent job of combining complicated linguistic explanations replete with examples of both correct and incorrect sentences. Everything is easy to handle, even for beginners. Japanese grammar does not seem as foreboding and complicated with this excellent book at hand.

It’s a pretty big book and the beginning of it covers a lot of information such as the abbreviations used throughout, lots of grammar terminology, and some aspects of the Japanese language. What’s great is that the sample sentences are written in Japanese, with romaji on the side. While the romaji helps with pronunciation, you’re not being short-changed in terms of Japanese script. This book should only be bought by advanced level students… or people who have OCD and must complete the set dslfjksaodfija!! It's also good for JLPT1 students, as it includes all that useless, uncommon grammar that you have to learn for that test. Most people won't have any need for this book, though I guess I've had to use it on rare occasion. The third book also levels up in difficulty with the example sentences and notes, though that's to be expected. It's assuming you're an advanced student of Japanese, after all! VerdictThis book uses Japanese words and phrases written in kanji, kana, and romaji to cater to beginners. Explanations are in English. And so, if you’re learning a decidedly complex language like Japanese, it’s important to come to grips with grammar. And while you can do these with the help of Japanese learning books, you can be a little bit more specific by reading Japanese grammar books. Why learn Japanese grammar from books? As another reviewer mentioned, this is not a textbook, so it doesn't start you from the beginning and gradually work you up. It's a reference book to look through for additional information. Given that this book doesn't have problems to solve, I recommend taking notes! In terms of format, all three books are pretty much the same. The beginning of each grammar point stands out because it's in red. Let's take a look at the grammar of no for an example.

It then provides a lot of helpful Japanese examples that help the reader see and fully understand it. Fortunately, the vocabulary used in this book is quite simple and easy to understand. That point alone sets this book apart from most textbook explanations of grammar, in which the authors usually feel the need to use whatever vocabulary was most recently introduced. Here the vocabulary words are simple and at an easy beginner level, allowing the student to focus on the grammar and not on the vocabulary. I think if you’re still pretty new to Japanese, then it would be worth going over, but if you’ve been studying for a couple months then you could probably skip this section. Not a lot of people enjoy studying grammar. While you don’t give it much thought in your native languages, it’s a completely different story when you’re learning a new language. That’s just one of the things you have to get used to when learning Japanese. The language also heavily relies on particles and there are 188 of these in Japanese! Plus, there are multiple levels of politeness. But it’s also nice to not worry about noun genders, plural forms, and complicated conjugations. What I'm try to say is this: You'll find what you're looking for and probably understand it. That's a nice combination. A Tale Of Three Books This book starts by giving equivalents in English, followed by Japanese translations. Each sentence pattern is accompanied by a straightforward explanation and several Japanese examples with kanji, kana, and romaji.

The book does a really great job at explaining how each grammar pattern works and how we would say the same thing in English.
