Dr. Abdur Rahim: An outstanding Scholar of Arabic Language and Literature, deeply learned in the Glorious Qur’an and Sunnah. It covers all the essential Arabic grammatical rules in such a way that the student is spared the monotonous task of memorizing them A few notes in favour of the textbook: The primary text is entirely in Arabic. This means that you're less inclined than you might otherwise be to glance at the English first. Good for making you actually reading Arabic. The grammar is *mostly* introduced just a little bit at a time, which makes it far easier to absorb. This is less true than in volume one &, in fact, the system falls apart in the final lessons of the book, where various kinds of verbs are taught all at once (this would have been easier if, for example, الفعل الأجوف—hollow verbs—had had its forms spread out over a few lessons, rather than having all forms introduced in one lesson). However, as I said, the book is mostly quite good about this. This is Part of a series developed by Shaykh Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi because the Arabic Books available for teaching students of advanced Arabic were mostly secular, and it was thought that it would be better to have t...

I read thru volume 1, did all the exercises verbally, & did no other study. (I usually combine textbooks with flashcards when learning a language.) I'm confident that I have all of the grammatical points presented, & the great majority of the vocabulary. The book makes a grammar very different from English quite accessible. The Arabic Course for English-Speaking Students is a comprehensive and popular course for the teaching of the Qur'anic and Traditional Arabic, originally devised and taught at the renowned Madinah Islamic University, catering for the non-Arabic speaking students from all over the world. Over the years, this course has enabled students to become competent in their use of the Arabic language and to participate and benefit from scholarly pursuits such as Qur'anic exegesis, hadith, fiqh, sirah, history, and classical and modern Arabic literature. It is concise (consisting of only three books, reasonably short) but extensive in their coverage. It combines modern Arabic vocabulary with Islamic terminology used in the Qur'an and Sunnah. It helps acquire an understanding of hundreds of Qur'anic verses, ahadith, Arabic parables and poetry. The author presents Arabic as a living and vibrant language and takes examples from Arabic in everyday use, as also from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, so that student learns the language. He also acquires an understanding of hundreds of Qur'anic verses, ahadith, Arabic parables and poetry. In this way, ethical teachings are infused into the whole, and the student becomes directly involved in the study of the Qu'ran and the Sunnah while simultaneously acquiring a sound understanding of the Arabic language. Grammatical terms used by Western Arabists are only given in Arabic. I think it's great that the student is being taught to think in terms of the Arabic grammar, but I think it's also useful to know how forms are described in other Western grammars. (Terms like 'noun', 'verb', & 'adjective' are used quite freely in the English translation, but we never learn that English-speaking Arabists refer to الفعل المثال as 'assimilated verbs'. It's probably better to think of the grammatical class by the Arabic term, but if one's using an English-language anyhow, it seems useful to have at least been introduced to the term by which this class will be identified in the primary English-language grammars.)

These books are not the three medina books that everyone knows about; rather they are the books that are used alongside the medina books that are used in the Medina University, these books a wide variety of topics like phrase usage of verbs and terms, Fiqh, Dictation, Hadith, Reading in which the 3 Medina Books by themselves do not cover. A variety of exercises help the student to understand and master each of the patterns occuring in the lesson. the vocabulary ranges from classical Arabic to words and expressions current in Modern Arabic. It covers all the essential Arabic grammatical rules in such a way that the student is spared the monotonous task of memorising them. With a teacher, I think that this could be an amazing textbook as it stands. For self-study, this is a well-thought-out textbook that has too many flaws to make it recommendable. It wouldn't take much for it to become a great book for learning basic classical Arabic.
